The God of Magic

Once, there was a god tasked with managing the world’s magic power.

He had no name. He was known simply as the God of Magic.

Managing magic power was a tedious and difficult endeavor, but for that very reason, he took immense pride in his work. However, there came a day when the God of Magic failed.

"How can this be?! The magic power is leaking! At this rate, it will spread across the entire world!"

Because of that failure, the races known as demi-humans were born into the world. It was a monumental blunder. Ashamed of his mistake, the God of Magic offered a formal apology to the Creator God who had entrusted him with the task.

The Creator God did not show anger.

"Even gods make mistakes," the Creator God said. "Since new lives have been born, watch over them. Do not abandon them."

With those words, the God of Magic was given a new duty: he became the God of Demi-humans.

He worked tirelessly. He managed the flow of magic more strictly than ever before while keeping a watchful eye over the demi-human races. It should have been the end of the matter.

Then, one day, the true reason for his initial failure came to light.

As it turned out, a foolish male god and a foolish female god had been trysting inside the vital storehouse where the world's magic power was kept. How did he find out? Because the pair did the exact same thing again.

Once more, magic power leaked out into the world.

This time, the God of Magic’s patience reached its limit. He snapped. He bludgeoned the foolish male god and the foolish female god to death on the spot, causing them to vanish.

Gods do not truly die; they simply return to the source of all divine origins. However, the foolish male god had been in charge of the world's people, and the foolish female god had managed the world's crops. Though new gods would eventually be dispatched, the world was destined to fall into chaos in their absence. Furthermore, the newly leaked magic power gave birth to monsters and magic beasts.

If left unchecked, the world would collapse. Acting instinctively, the God of Magic took what magic power he had on hand and descended to the mortal realm. There, he successfully prevented the world's destruction.

And yet, for his actions, the God of Magic was forbidden from returning to the divine realm. He was sealed deep beneath the earth of the world he had just saved.

He was furious. Why? But deep down, he understood the reason. By using magic power to interfere directly with the world, he had thrown the natural order into disarray. His influence had bled beyond a single world, affecting several others. Critical laws of existence had been warped beyond repair.

Thinking back on it calmly now, perhaps being merely sealed was a lenient sentence. It was just like the gentle Creator God to be so merciful. He had likely intended to break the seal after a thousand years and allow a return to the heavens.

But at the time, the God of Magic had been consumed by the perceived injustice. He had raged, spitting out curses and maledictions against both the gods and the world itself.

Had I really been so foolish?

I looked at the Jewel Cat sleeping beside me. Inside her belly was my child.

My child...

I wondered then if I had finally been forgiven. Or was I meant to simply rot away in this feline form?

In truth, either was fine. I no longer possessed the grand power I once wielded, but I would protect my wife and child regardless.

Ah, and I suppose... I would protect the residents of this village as well.

"Urza, don't run while you're carrying the Cat!"

"Ehhh, but—"

"No 'buts.' Now, give him back. And look at how you're holding him! Be gentle!"

The High Ogre girl rescued me once again. I was grateful to her, just as I was grateful for the food she provided. I truly enjoyed the fish. If possible, I would have been even happier if she served it with a small amount of sake...

Ah, no, it was nothing.

My unborn child... your father is doing his best.

Extra

Oho, you there, child. Alfred, was it?

The right corner of the kotatsu is my domain. I shall commend you for identifying the prime location, but I must ask you to yield it to me.

Umu. You are an obedient one. You possess the making of a great man. For your compliance, I shall bestow my blessing upon you.

As a bonus, I shall permit you to stroke my back. Do it gently, now. A bit higher... yes, right there, right there... Ugh! Urza!

Kuh! Why must you subject me to a low-altitude high-speed tackle the moment you lay eyes on me?! I know we have quite a complicated history, but... I’ll apologize! Just forgive me already!
