◆◆◆

After finishing lunch, we headed to a clothing store inside the shopping mall.

"Souta-kun, which one do you like better?"

Nagi held up two choices for me to see: a pure white down coat and a chocolate-colored cardigan. The down coat had a hood lined with white fur along the trim.

"If you prefer the cardigan, I thought this knit cap might go well with it."

With that, Nagi showed me a black knit cap. Her gaze shifted back and forth between the options before settling on me.

Her eyes made it clear she wanted me to decide.

Truthfully, I wanted to tell her that both would look great, but I had a feeling that wasn't the answer she was looking for right now.

"I think the cardigan and knit cap would really suit you, Nagi."

"All right! Then I'll try them on....Ah, I'm sorry. Would you mind putting just the coat back where it was?"

"Yeah, sure. Are you sure, though?"

"Yes. I was thinking that one would suit me better as well."

Nodding at her words, I took the coat. Nagi then stepped into the fitting room.

I hung the coat back on its rack and waited outside the stall.

The store was bustling, and since this area carried women's clothing, almost all the shoppers around were women. While it felt a little awkward, waiting for Nagi wasn't unpleasant in the slightest.

Just then, a female sales clerk approached me.

"Your girlfriend is so very pretty, isn't she?"

"G-Girlfriend... Ah, thank you. Well, lover and fiancée, technically."

I didn't strictly need to correct her, but it slipped out before I could stop myself. I figured Nagi would probably say the same thing.

Hearing my response, the clerk leaned in eagerly.

"Your fiancée? Her skin and hair are both so gorgeous... She speaks such fluent Japanese, but is she from abroad? Where did you two meet?"

"N-No, well. She was raised in Japan."

This clerk is really pushing hard.

Come to think of it, Eiji once said something about this.

"Women, no matter their age, are creatures who love romantic gossip..."

If I recalled correctly, he mentioned that when he announced he was dating Nishizawa at a New Year's gathering, things got totally out of hand. Since both of them had only attended the family get-together to collect New Year's money, they ended up getting interrogated down to the smallest detail.

"By the way, sir, what was it about your wife that made you fall for her?"

"S-Sir...? Wife...?"

Well, maybe we'd become that eventually... No, we definitely would.

Even though I knew it was just customer service flattery, hearing it out loud gave me a ticklish feeling.

While I hesitated over how to respond, the clerk's face lit up as she pressed on.

"I'll bring over some outfits that match your tastes, sir! So please! Do tell me!"

What tremendous pressure. I instinctively took a step back.

Well... I supposed a little bit couldn't hurt. Nagi didn't seem ready to come out yet anyway, and as long as I didn't cross the line into her personal privacy, it should be fine.

"Um, well, there are a lot of things. At first, it was love at first sight."

Besides, having the clerk bring over recommended clothes worked out nicely.

I was a complete novice when it came to fashion, and Nagi didn't seem overly confident either. That was why the two of us had just been talking earlier about wanting to buy a few outfits recommended by the staff.

While I wanted to take our time picking things out together, doing that after hearing the clerk's suggestions wouldn't be too late.

And from where the clerk had been standing earlier, she had probably overheard our conversation. That was likely why she approached us. When all was said and done, it was her job. If I chatted a bit, she'd be satisfied and pick out some great clothes for us.

...Or so I thought at the time.

"Her blue eyes like the sea, and hair as pure white as snow. And her skin is so beautiful that, in the beginning, I couldn't help but stare at her all the time."

"Uh-huh, uh-huh. What else?!"

"W-Well, you see. At first, I just thought she was pretty, but after watching her for a while, I realized her heart was beautiful and kind too. And when I got to know her, I found out she has cute sides as well."

"I see, I see! The gap-moe effect, right?!"

...I thought sharing this much would be plenty.

"What else! Is there anything else?!"

However, the clerk leaned in with ragged breaths, asking as if she hadn't had nearly enough.

◆◇◆

"And then, she never neglects to put in effort. That's another thing that made me fall for her... or rather, I like watching her work hard. Especially seeing her try her best—it makes her look even more beautiful."

"How wonderful! Your wife, I mean! To be so gorgeous, yet never grow conceited and continually put in effort! I think that's truly fantastic!"

...Everything.

I can hear everything, Souta-kun. Every single word.

My burning cheeks certainly aren't because of the heater.

Being praised by Souta-kun makes me so, so happy.

Happy, but...

An equal amount of embarrassment is swirling through my head.

I can guess why Souta-kun is talking to her. It's probably because we talked earlier about having the clerk pick out some outfits for us.

He remembered that properly, which is why he's sharing all this.

To avoid digging into my privacy, he's only sharing his own personal impressions. There are barely any specific anecdotes. But still...

"That's not it, Souta-kun."

I whispered under my breath, making sure my voice wouldn't carry outside.

Souta-kun probably thinks this is just the clerk's sales talk. Praising someone's lover to loosen their purse strings. Certainly, that might be part of it.

But the clerk probably just wants to hear romantic stories under the guise of work. I know because I'm often asked about this at school. Girls come to ask far more often than boys....Though that might partly be because many boys look at me with strange eyes, and Hayama-san drives them away.

Even taking that into account, most girls simply love hearing love stories.

Maybe Souta-kun anticipated it a little, but he probably doesn't realize just how much girls love this kind of talk. At school, Makisaka-san probably handles all of that for him.

"W-What should I do?"

I've completely lost the timing to step out.

At this rate, I might have to listen to him praise me endlessly. Until Souta-kun runs out of things he... l-likes about me. He'll probably try to talk for that long. Most likely.

I can't endure that. Not just my face, but my entire body will turn bright red.

Just then.

"Hey! Are you bothering the customers again?!"

"Eek!...N-No, I'm not! I was just getting a grasp of the customer's tastes! Store Manager!"

Store Manager.

With that word, I understood everything.

"What kind of clerk troubles a customer?!...Sigh. You've figured out their tastes by now, right? Hurry up and get some clothes ready that will suit the customer!"

"Yes, ma'am!"

I heard brisk footsteps walking away, followed by the sound of a woman letting out a sigh.

"I'm terribly sorry. Whenever that girl sees a couple or newlyweds, she tries to pry into their love life right away....Her fashion sense is solid, though, so please trust her on that much."

"Y-Yes. Thank you very much."

A brief silence followed. After that... I heard Souta-kun gasp.

"C-Could you hear all of that, Nagi?"

I pulled back the curtain. Souta-kun was standing right in front of me.

He started to bow his head in apology, so I stopped him with a look.

I know. Souta-kun did nothing wrong.

He did nothing wrong, but...

"...You meanie, Souta-kun."

To convey just how embarrassed I was, I told him without hiding my flushed face.

◆◇◆

My thoughts ground to a halt.

"...You meanie, Souta-kun."

A thin film of moisture glazed her eyes. Her cheeks were bright red, and her lips twitched slightly.

She was even more embarrassed than she had been back at the food court.

I shouldn't harbor such feelings. Even though I knew that—I thought she was cute. Truly adorable.

"You're mean, Souta-kun."

"N-No, well, you see..."

I tried to reply to her repeated accusation, but my cheeks threatened to loosen into a grin... My mind refused to work, and the right words wouldn't come out.

"Geez, Souta-kun..."

Was it a relief that I could sense something other than anger in her expression?

Nagi beckoned me over. When I took a step closer, she tapped my shoulder, signaling for me to offer my ear.

I obediently leaned in. Just like before, Nagi cupped her hands into a tube, placing them against my ear to create a pathway for her voice.

"Once we get home—"

A shiver ran down my spine, making me shudder.

Nagi's voice was so beautiful. Light, clear, and pleasant to the ear, like rolling bells. A voice I could listen to forever... and yet.

"Please be prepared. Once we get home, it'll be my turn."

Her breath-laced whisper traveled through my ear, tickling my brain.

A thrilling, pleasurable shudder ran down my back, raising goosebumps all over my body.

"N-Nagi. T-That kind of thing is..."

"...!"

When Nagi heard the words I managed to squeeze out, she looked at me... and gave a small giggle.

Her breath brushed against my ear, nearly making me tremble.

"Souta-kun, are your ears sensitive?"

Nagi's hand gently caressed the back of mine. Gently tracing the skin that had erupted in goosebumps from the ticklish sensation... and whatever else was mixed into it—

"Fufu. I just learned something nice."

Saying that, Nagi finally pulled away.

I had a very, very bad feeling about this....Tonight, would I be able to endure? I had to endure. Hang in there, reason.

"Ah, to be young."

At the store manager's remark, Nagi snapped back to reality and cleared her throat softly.

"...E-Excuse me, Souta-kun."

Turning back to me, Nagi did a graceful spin.

"Once again, what do you think? Does it suit me?"

"...Yeah. I think it looks amazing on you."

The shade of the cardigan accentuated her calm, mature aura, while the black knit cap brought out a slightly youthful, innocent charm.

"You're so pretty, Nagi, I feel like anything would look good on you. Though of course, some things suit you especially well."

"Fufu. Thank you very much."

It wasn't flattery at all. It was my honest truth.

Wearing subdued colors emphasized Nagi's maturity, making her look even more beautiful.

On the other hand, I thought a dress in a cute color palette would suit her too. Casual fashion as well... It would drastically change her vibe, but it would definitely look great.

"Ah, by the way, you don't need to worry about the money. Father told me to buy as much as I like, so I have the funds....Though carrying cash would be unsafe, so it's on a card."

"Is that so?"

"I haven't had much materialistic desire until now....Of course, I don't intend to waste money. But buying a few winter outfits won't be a problem at all. The cold days will continue for a while longer, after all."

I didn't think Nagi would waste money either.

Lifting the corner of her mouth into a small smile, Nagi continued.

"'A student's job is to have fun. A father's job is to work so his family wants for nothing,' he said while I was packing my bags."

So Souichirou-san started referring to himself as "Father" in front of Nagi, huh.

Thinking that, I also felt it was a very Souichirou-san thing to say.

"He really trusts you."

It was an obvious truth, but I felt so happy for her that I voiced it aloud.

Souichirou-san knew Nagi handled her studies properly and wouldn't squander money foolishly. Knowing she possessed a strong sense of responsibility, he must have given it to her with confidence. Of course, it might simply be that he purely trusted Nagi as his family.

Either way, Souichirou-san was watching over Nagi properly.

Realizing that made me happy.

"Yes!"

Nagi nodded with a smile as well.

After that, Nagi tried on various outfits... and afterward, I tried on various clothes in a men's store as well.

Before we knew it, evening had arrived.

After promising Nagi that we would visit various places again tomorrow, we headed home.

◆◆◆

Today was a fun day. The curry Mom made for dinner was delicious too.

However, having walked quite a bit, fatigue had accumulated in my legs before I even realized it....Well, we had been on our feet since morning, and in the afternoon, we browsed clothing stores, hats, bags, and the like. We spent almost the entire time walking or standing, so getting tired was only natural.

On the bright side, the bath felt amazing. It felt like all the exhaustion was draining from my body, to the point where I got a little sleepy. I massaged my own legs to wake myself up, but it wasn't very effective.

"Phew. That was a great bath."

"Fufu. Good work today, Souta-kun. Thank you for keeping me company all day."

"You're welcome....Though I had fun too. I got to visit nostalgic places, so it goes both ways. Thank you as well."

"Fufu, you're very welcome."

Since Nagi had taken her bath first, she was already in her usual pajamas. Sitting on the bed, she gently patted the spot next to her. Prompted by her gesture, I sat down beside Nagi.

"Souta-kun."

Her blue eyes gazed into mine. Eyes as endlessly blue as the ocean. Being stared at by them made me feel like I could sink endlessly into their depths. Yet, I didn't struggle. I didn't even think to. Sinking endlessly felt... so comfortable, so welcoming. It made me want to surrender myself entirely.

Her eyes drifted half-shut... then stopped. Nagi narrowed her eyes and gave a sweet smile.

"You remember what I said at noon, right?"

"...At noon?"

"Yes!"

The face of that store clerk flashed in my mind. The one who had pressed me so aggressively with questions.

And at the same time, I remembered... showering Nagi with praise right in front of her. And her words: "Once we get home, it'll be my turn."

"Ah— By the way, what happens if I say I forgot?"

"I will help you remember....The night is long, after all. We have plenty of time, so I'll take all the time in the world to help you remember."

Her beaming smile brooked no argument. It looked like my only choice was to quietly surrender. Well, it wasn't like I actually intended to claim I forgot anyway.

"I-I'm just joking, of course. I remember perfectly."

"I'm glad to hear that. But before that..."

Saying that, Nagi let go of my hand. She then patted her own thighs.

"Shall we clean your ears?"

And in the hand that had been hidden until now, she was holding an earpick.

"...Huh? Since when did you have that?"

"I actually brought it with me. I wanted to clean your ears while we were visiting here, Souta-kun."

Nagi spoke proudly. Taken aback by the sudden development, I was flustered. Even so, Nagi maintained her cheerful smile and patted her thighs again.

"Come here, Souta-kun. Or would you prefer to be forced?"

A chuckle escaped her soft lips.

I can't win. Though I suppose it's not a matter of winning or losing. Honestly, no matter what I said, there was probably no way to escape the current Nagi....Besides, my own desire to escape was pretty weak to begin with.

I turned away from Nagi and leaned back. I intended to place my head as far from her torso as possible, but guided by her hands, my head ended up right in the middle of her thighs.

"A-Am I heavy?"

"This much isn't heavy at all. I'm much sturdier than you think, Souta-kun. Please put more of your weight down. Your neck will get tired, you know?"

What brushed against my ear and cheek was a fluffy, soft texture. It was Nagi's pajamas.

Nagi gently caressed my cheek.

"If you don't hurry up, I'll tickle you, you know?"

Startled by those words, I relaxed the tension in my neck. Even so, Nagi continued to stroke my cheek. As if seeing right through me... when I glanced up at Nagi, her blue eyes told me to relax completely.

Obediently, I let all the tension drain from my body. Seeing this, Nagi gave a satisfied nod and slid her hand toward my ear.

"Well then, shall I begin cleaning your ears?"

"...Please do."

To be honest, it was intensely embarrassing. But hearing Nagi's excited voice made it impossible to refuse... Or so I made up as an excuse, but the emotion swirling deep in my heart wasn't just embarrassment.

I was getting a lap pillow from the person I loved—there was no way I wouldn't be happy.

Gently, the earpick was pressed against the rim of my ear. From there, it slowly traced along the contours.

"Tell me if it hurts, okay?"

"Got it."

Nagi's voice echoed softly in the quiet room as the earpick slipped deeper inside my ear.

"Ngh..."

A sensation different from doing it myself. A mixture of ticklishness and something else entirely almost drew a gasp from my lips.

"Fufu."

Of course, Nagi noticed... When I shifted just my eyes to look at her, she wore a faint smile.

"You know, it's fine. You don't have to hold back your voice. I'm the only one listening."

"N-No. That's just too embarrassing."

"Is that so? What a pity."

Saying, "Well then, I'll continue," Nagi moved her hand.

"Mgh..."

The earpick tickled the inside of my ear. A soft sound escaped my lips for an instant, but after that, I gradually grew accustomed to it. And before long, the ticklishness transformed into pure comfort.

Scritch... scritch. Slowly, meticulously, she cleaned my ear.

With the side of her hand resting against my cheek, Nagi's body warmth seeped through to me.

"It feels good."

"I'm glad."

Naturally, there was embarrassment. But more than that, it felt amazing. This kind of feeling had to be put into words to be conveyed.

Whenever Nagi occasionally paused her hand, she would stroke my cheek. Wrapped in a human warmth different from the heater, the heat permeated not just my body, but my heart as well.

It was a time so blissful, so comfortable, that my brain felt like it was melting. But such moments don't last forever. The earpick was withdrawn from my right ear, signaling the end.

"Now then, Souta-kun. Please turn to the other side."

"Yeah....Wait, what?"

I had nodded reflexively, but... Turning to the other side meant...

Facing Nagi? Meaning, turning my face toward Nagi's stomach?

No, that was a bit too stimulating in various ways. It might be a little troublesome, but I should move my entire body over to Nagi's left side instead. Thinking that, I started to sit up... but Nagi gently caught my arm.

"Souta-kun?"

"...What is it?"

"Please face this way, okay?"

Nagi smiled sweetly and pulled me closer. My head softly landed on her thighs once again.

"B-But, you know..."

"We sleep together in the same bed, don't we? It's a bit late to be shy about this."

"That... might be true, but..."

Still, it was just so embarrassing.

Whether Nagi knew how I felt or not... No, knowing Nagi, she definitely realized it.

Even so, she directed that cheerful smile right at me.

"A-All right. I get it, I get it."

Feeling an unspoken pressure, I nodded.

With a satisfied Nagi watching from above, I shifted my posture, placing my head as close to her knees as possible.

Toward her knees. I lay down there, keeping as much distance from Nagi's torso as I could.

Since it was called a lap pillow, this was totally safe. In fact, by definition, this was probably more accurate.

Or so I told myself.

"Geez, you're hopeless."

At Nagi's words, I felt relieved, thinking I had been forgiven.

—I had let my guard down.

"I'll have to do this to such a bad boy."

Nagi grabbed my body and pulled me in with tremendous force. It was done with so much momentum that my face ended up pressed flush against her body.

The tip of my nose bumped right into Nagi's stomach.

The sweet aroma that had been drifting softly grew even stronger. A sweet scent blending body soap and fabric softener. And the fluffy, plush sensation of her pajamas touching the tip of my nose.

My head spun, and my reason slowly began to melt away.

However, it didn't end there.

Squish. Something soft... and substantial settled against my cheek.

"You can't run away anymore, Souta-kun."

Even as Nagi's words entered my ears, I couldn't reply, yet for some reason my thoughts refused to stop.

Did she do this knowingly...? She probably did it on purpose.

I'd heard somewhere before... that women with large chests can't see their own feet.

My head was currently near her thighs, pressed so far inward it touched her stomach. Since it was hard for Nagi to see my ear, she leaned forward... and that's probably why it made contact.

Even as I thought about all that, the squishy sensation pressed against my cheek didn't disappear....In fact, it felt like it was being pressed even harder than before.

"...It's still a little hard to see."

"Wait—"

My face was shifted slightly.

Even though it had only been touching the area near my ear before... the softness encroached all the way near my left eye. Half of my field of vision was stolen away.

The warm, fluffy, plush texture of her pajamas. Yet beneath that, I could clearly feel an entirely different kind of softness.

A sweet scent, different from before, pierced through my nasal cavity, stimulating my brain... and my heart.

The thread of my reason was on the verge of snapping. I could hear the sound of the woven, bundled threads snapping one by one.

"...I-I get it. I get it, I won't run away. Things are pressing against me, and I won't be able to hold back... so please, just pull away a tiny bit. Otherwise... I'll end up hurting you, Nagi."

If the thread of my reason snapped like this, I was terrified I might do something awful to her.

When I managed to string those words together, a laugh like rolling bells reached my ears.

"...Fufu. All right."

And with that, I was finally—finally released.

My heart was still pounding furiously.

I rolled onto my back and let out a long breath.

"I'm sorry, Souta-kun. I just wanted to tease you a little."

"...Um, just to be clear, it's not like I disliked it or anything."

I'm a relatively healthy high school boy, so naturally, I have various desires. I don't know about other guys, so I can't say if it's average or not, but still.

Nagi leaned over to peer into my face.

Her face was bright red... and mine was probably just as red.

"Souta-kun."

Nagi's thin lips moved slightly, calling out to me in a murmur.

"There's one thing I want to tell you."

"What is it?"

I replied to Nagi, trying to disguise my embarrassment. I kept my gaze averted as much as possible.

Because if I wasn't careful, I felt my eyes would be drawn right back there.

"There's no way you could ever hurt me, Souta-kun. No matter what you do to me."

"That's..."

I tried to ask what she meant by that. However, I couldn't.

Because before I knew it, Nagi's face was right in front of mine—and our lips overlapped.

It happened right when I was about to breathe in, right when I was about to speak. My mouth had been half-open.

For a moment. It was truly just an instant.

—She gave me a kiss unlike our usual ones.

The moment I realized that, a shock like lightning surged through my entire body. I genuinely thought my heart had stopped.

"I'm confident that no matter what you do to me, Souta-kun, it will only make me happy....Ah, there are exceptions, of course. Cheating, and things like that."

"I-I won't. I'd never do something that would make you sad, Nagi."

"Yes, I know."

My mind was still a jumble from what had just happened. Even so, when I managed to reply, Nagi's moist, blue eyes were looking straight at me.

"I know, you see. I know how much you treasure me, Souta-kun. I feel it deep down in my bones."

Nagi's finger gently rested on my lips.

"That makes me happy too, but... I'm not that fragile, you know."

Her slender, beautiful finger gently tapped my lips. Her nails were neatly trimmed, not digging into my skin at all.

"Especially when it comes to you, Souta-kun, I will accept anything. Even if it hurts a little."

"...What if it doesn't stop at just a little?"

"I'll accept all of it....Is what I'd like to say, but..."

Nagi pulled her finger back and touched her own soft lips.

An indirect kiss. It was a bit late to care about that, but... my heart couldn't help beating loudly and rapidly. Even so, I focused so as not to miss her words.

"That wouldn't be good for your mental well-being, Souta-kun. So if that were really the case, I plan to explore other methods that you might enjoy instead."

"I-It was just a hypothetical, okay? It's not like I actually like that sort of thing!"

"Is that so? Even if it left bruises for a few days, I wouldn't mind at all, though."

Leaving bruises on Nagi's pure white skin... I didn't want to do that. Rather, I had no hobby of taking pleasure in someone else's pain.

"Well then, when the time comes, please tell me without holding back. What you like, Souta-kun."

"............Yours too, Nagi."

"Yes!"

She replied with an open, innocent smile like a child's. Even though the subject matter was the exact opposite.

Remembering the contents of our conversation reignited the heat that had just begun to settle. To hide it, I turned to the side.

"Can you... please continue?"

"Of course!"

Listening to Nagi's words, I closed my eyes.

"Once this is over, it will finally be my turn, after all."

Come to think of it, the way she phrased it made ear cleaning sound like just an opening act. What was she going to do once the ear cleaning was over?

I nearly shuddered.

Would my reason be able to hold out?

◆◆◆

"That's the end... isn't it? I feel a little lonely."

The ticklish yet pleasant sensation vanished.

Nagi lifted her hands, and the faint weight resting on my head disappeared.

"It's over, huh."

"Fufu. Do you feel lonely too, Souta-kun?"

"...A little."

Even as I said it, a wry smile escaped me.

Even though I knew I was being far too pampered by Nagi—I couldn't stop. I found myself not even wanting to stop.

"In that case, shall I clean your ears from now on?"

"N-No. I'd feel bad."

"I want to do it. I want to do it, and you want it done, Souta-kun. It works out perfectly."

Still... wouldn't I be receiving far too much pampering from Nagi? Thinking that... I remembered I was still lying on Nagi's thighs and pushed myself up.

At the same time, a good idea struck me.

"In that case, I'll clean your ears too, Nagi."

Nagi's eyes widened for a moment in surprise....Then, narrowing her eyes, she smiled softly.

"Yes, please do. But today I already did it before you came, Souta-kun, so let's do it next time."

"Yeah. Got it. Let me do it next time, okay?"

Nagi murmured, "Yes," with a soft breath, and I nodded in satisfaction.

Now then—normally, it would be time to sleep.

It felt a bit early, but lately, influenced by Nagi, I had started going to sleep around ten o'clock. Well, we influenced each other. Nagi used to go to bed around nine, but influenced by me, she had started staying up later.

"Souta-kun."

Nagi called my name.

Lately, that was completely normal; she called it many times every day.

However... if asked whether I was completely used to it, I couldn't honestly nod.

Every time she called me in that light voice, my heart beat just a little faster. Though compared to the beginning, I was getting used to it.

There were many different tones in the way she called me.

When asking what we should have for dinner.

When trying to share something fun that happened that day.

When we had nothing to do and she just wanted to talk.

And when she wanted to be spoiled.

All of them had slightly different tones of voice. Since it changed depending on Nagi's emotions at the time, I couldn't pretend to understand everything just from having my name called. But I could grasp a fair amount.

And this time, the voice Nagi used to call me was—

"Please come here."

A tone I had never heard before. The words that followed carried an unfamiliar cadence as well.

It sounded like when she wanted to be spoiled, but slightly different.

After calling me, Nagi said that while sitting toward the back of the bed, against the wall.

"Yeah."

While having a vague, bad feeling, I had no reason to disobey.

"Ah, Souta-kun, please lie down facing that way."

"...? Got it."

Just as Nagi said, I lay down facing away from the wall. In other words, facing away from Nagi.

I wondered what on earth she was going to do, but I couldn't imagine it at all.

"Souta-kun."

Suddenly, she whispered right by my ear.

All sorts of emotions raced through my entire body. I tried to twist around, but her next words kept me from cal—no, I couldn't calm down at all.

"Please don't move too much."

Because those words were whispered right into my ear too. There was no way I could stay calm.

On top of that, Nagi's breathing tickled my ear. A sound nearly escaped my lips, so I covered my mouth with my hand.

However, Nagi didn't stop.

"You teased me so much today, Souta-kun. This is my payback."

It wasn't her usual voice. It was a whisper held back to the absolute limit of volume.

Every time Nagi chuckled softly, her breath brushed against my ear, sending shivers tickling down my spine.

"And so, I am now going to tell you all the things I love about you, Souta-kun."

I thought about asking if she was serious, but stopped myself.

If I raised my voice right now... I felt like only weird sounds would come out.

While I stayed quiet, Nagi continued playfully.

"Please be prepared. Because there are so many things I love about you, Souta-kun, that I can't even count them all."

With those words as the starting signal—a time that felt like hell and heaven all at once, so full of joy and embarrassment that I thought I might die, began.

Inhale. I heard the sound of Nagi taking a breath right up close.

"Souta-kun, you are extremely considerate. In the beginning, I knew you always stood near the train doors just to move me to a safe position, you know."

I could clearly hear even the sound of her breath mixed with her voice. That was how close she had brought her face to my ear.

"Because you stood in front of the doors, you had to step off for the passengers boarding and exiting at every station. Doing that once is one thing, but doing it every morning and evening must have been quite a hassle. But you never brought up the matter yourself, Souta-kun. Much less did you ever suggest stopping. I truly, from the bottom of my heart, respect how deeply considerate you are....I love that so much."

Her soft, sweet voice tickled my eardrum, making my body tremble. Even so, she didn't stop.

This is bad. I thought I'd interject once I got a little used to it... but there was no sign of me getting used to this at all.

"Ah, but neglecting yourself is no good. Like with meals....From now on, I will make up for whatever you lack, Souta-kun, so it will be fine, though."

The tiny sound of her tongue moving and her whispered voice slowly caressed my eardrum.

When her breath brushed against it on top of that, I was struck by a sensation as if sparks were crackling in my brain.

Not only that—her body warmth was radiating across my entire back.

And from my shoulder, I could feel a heartbeat that wasn't mine thumping steadily.

Thump, thump.

"I love you so much, Souta-kun."

Being told those words so frequently made my heart leap again, sending endorphins flooding throughout my entire body. Because of that, my hands even felt a little numb.

"Fufu. I love seeing you squirm like that too, Souta-kun. It's so cute."

"Ngh..."

Something soft touched my earlobe.

It didn't take more than a few seconds to realize that she had gently kissed it.

Really—in so many ways, this was bad.

The thread of my reason was held in her hands. If she applied force, it would easily snap into pieces.

Even so, she never applied force, only gently stroking the thread....Occasionally playing with the taut string as if drawing a bow.

I reflexively closed my eyes.

"I also love how you continuously put in effort, Souta-kun. Watching you is so cool, it makes me want to do my best too."

However, closing my eyes was a bad move.

With my vision blocked, my other senses were sharpened. Her breath brushing against my ear... and her voice sounded even clearer. Naturally, so did her warmth against my back.

"...Haa."

Nagi let out a small sigh. It wasn't a negative sigh of exasperation or anything like that.

It was as if she were breathing out heavily swollen emotions.

And... when she exhaled, it naturally brushed against my ear.

"Ah, I'm sorry."

My body gave a violent shudder, and Nagi apologized, perhaps realizing it had been unintentional.

"There are still so many things I love about you, Souta-kun... My feelings just overflowed."

Simultaneously with those words, the warmth against my back and the heartbeat against my shoulder vanished. The presence right beside my ear pulled away as well.

"Souta-kun. Please turn this way."

It was her usual voice. Feeling relieved by that, I turned around...

"Please give me a hug, Souta-kun."

There stood Nagi, arms spread wide, waiting for me.

Her expression seemed confident that she wouldn't be rejected... and I hesitated for a moment.

"Souta-kun?"

"...I'll say this first. Please don't mind anything."

I gave only that warning. Hugging Nagi right now was inconvenient in various ways, but even so, rejecting her hug was not an option.

"I understand."

Her voice was gentle, yet as if she couldn't wait any longer, she took my hands and pulled me toward herself. I gripped Nagi's hands in return, drew my body close to hers... and we embraced.

"Ehehe."

Nagi hugged me tightly and giggled.

—Remaining like that, she rested her chin on my shoulder. Once again, her breath brushed my ear—

"I noticed, you know, Souta-kun."

Thump. My heart gave a heavy leap.

"...Geez. I was the one who told you that you didn't need to hold back, wasn't I?"

Nagi's hand pulled away from my back. Without looking down, she fumbled for my hand and clasped it once more. I wasn't so dense... that I couldn't understand what she was trying to say.

"You can do whatever you want, Souta-kun."

Nagi pulled her face back from my shoulder and rested her forehead against mine.

Her face was bright red.

The hand holding mine was placed against her chest—and then, Nagi smoothly released her grip. She then embraced me again, placing her own hand over mine.

"Na... gi...?"

"You don't need to hold back with me."

Inside my palm. There was a warm, soft sensation.

"You can touch me more firmly, you know."

With a soft giggle, Nagi's face drew even closer.

—Our lips overlapped.

Enveloped in a sweet scent, my thoughts wavered wildly.

"But..."

"Fufu. Please don't be so scared. It's okay."

Once again, Nagi's lips touched mine. Those moist, soft lips.

After that, our lips met again and again, repeatedly.

Every time, the thread of my reason threatened to melt completely, and my head grew feverishly hot. Even so, she didn't stop.

"Ngh... I, love you."

Murmured between kisses, those words sent thrilling shivers down my spine.

Hardly any reason remained.

I wanted to surrender myself to my desires just like this. However, at the same time, the reason lingering in the corner of my heart sounded an alarm that it was no good.

Why was it no good? Was it because we were still students?...Because I believed such things should wait until we were adults?

How was it viewed by modern standards, anyway? Doing it as high schoolers. Assuming contraception was a given, of course.

No, that's wrong. This isn't something to decide based on what others do.

What mattered was what I thought of Nagi....Because how Nagi felt about me had already been made abundantly clear.

"I... love you too, Nagi."

When I said that in return, the corners of Nagi's eyes softened languidly. Her cheeks loosened loosely into a smile.

"Nn....I love you. I love you so much, Souta-kun."

Every time our lips met, the sweet scent pierced straight to my core, filling my heart with happiness. If even a single, fleeting kiss overflowed with euphoria, exchanging kisses like this over and over made me feel like I would go crazy from sheer happiness.

"I want to be... even happier, with you, Souta-kun..."

Those words resonated deeply in my heart.

And I—

"Nagi."

I called her name once. And pressed our lips together again.

Perhaps sensing that my mood had shifted, Nagi's eyes regained a bit of their sharp focus.

Taking a deep breath in and letting it out, I slowly opened my mouth.

"Um, you see."

"Yes."

"From the bottom of my heart, I want to be happy with you, Nagi. Going all the way like this... I don't think it would be bad. To be honest, I want to. But—"

I tried to pull my hand away, but sandwiched beneath Nagi's hand, I couldn't.

"Please... leave this as it is. Having your hand here makes me feel safe."

"...A-All right."

Honestly, my focus threatened to be dragged right back there... but somehow managing to look away from it, I continued speaking to Nagi.

"I feel like doing it here would put a lot of strain on you, Nagi....The bed is narrow, and this is my family's house. You might say it's fine even so, but..."

"Yes. In any situation... I'm fine with it, you know?"

Nagi smiled gently and hugged my arm tightly. Feeling her rapidly pounding heartbeat... I somehow, desperately managed to banish the thought of how soft she felt to the edge of my mind.

"I want... to do it properly with you, Nagi. In a place where there are no constraints at all."

I knew Nagi had prepared herself before saying all this.

I also knew that these words of mine... might trample on that resolve.

Even so—since it would be the first time in both of our lives, I didn't want to compromise.

"Fufu. I know."

Nagi was smiling.

"I'm sorry. I teased you a little, didn't I?"

"T-Teased...?"

"Of course, I was completely serious about everything. It's just that, no matter what happened, I knew I was loved."

Nagi gently pressed a kiss to my lips.

"If you didn't do it, I'd know you truly love and cherish me, Souta-kun. If you did do it, I'd know that the me reflected in your eyes is truly attractive."

Nagi's hand was placed gently against my cheek.

"You're truly... cute. And so very cool, Souta-kun."

"...Still."

"Fufu. Please don't make that face. From my perspective, this was the best possible outcome."

"Look," Nagi said, and when I looked down...

My hand was still resting on Nagi's breast....However, before I realized it, Nagi had stopped holding my hand against her.

"Souta-kun. You haven't let go."

"—Ah! S-Sorry!"

"There's no need to apologize. In fact, you can touch more if you like."

Nagi opened her arms, inviting me back there again. I hesitated for a moment.

However, Nagi kept waiting. Slowly, I reached out one hand.

Naturally, without being stopped by anyone... my palm cupped her breast.

"...Ngh."

"D-Did that hurt?"

"No....Just, it feels different from when I press or touch it myself—"

Nagi's words cut off there, and she clamped a hand over her own mouth.

"P-Please forget what I just said."

"Y-Yeah."

Forget... Could I? No, I had to. Since she asked me to.

Even so—

"I-If you have any impressions, I'd be happy if you shared them."

"...It's big. And the weight... is amazing. Like, I can see why people say it causes stiff shoulders."

"That's true. Stiff shoulders are one of my troubles too. Though stretching and self-massage solve it to some extent."

Nagi gave a happy explanation. Should I give her shoulder massages when I have time?

Feeling the size and weight in my palm, I couldn't help but wonder. And then... I had to put this into words too.

"It's soft."

"Fufu. Was it to your liking, Souta-kun?"

"...Rather than it being to my liking, it's because it's you, Nagi, that I love everything about it."

I was so embarrassed my face felt on fire.

However—the fact that it still made me happy was probably just my nature as a guy.

"Would you like to touch directly?"

"T-That... would probably make me retract everything I just said, so I'll pass."

"I understand."

In my palm was the plush texture, and within it... the distinct softness.

For now, I took my hand away.

"Souta-kun."

"What is it?"

"I'll be looking forward to that time."

At those words, I choked up for a moment, but...

"...Yeah. I'll do my best."

I replied like that. Telling myself that the time wouldn't be too far off, I resolved to prepare my heart.

And so, the long—very long night drew toward its close.

◆◇◆

"Nagi-chan, you're really good at cooking. Did you learn from your mother?"

"Thank you very much. I learned from Mother, but also a little from Susaka-san... our maid."

The day before New Year's Eve. During the daytime, I had been working on winter break homework with Souta-kun.

And around evening, I was cooking together with Mother-in-law. Tonight's dinner was meat and potato stew.

"A maid... As expected of a young lady... Come to think of it, how have things been with Chie-san, your mother, since then? When we met recently, she consulted me about how to get closer to you, Nagi-chan."

"...Ah, so that's why Mother has been joining in on cooking lately whenever she isn't busy."

Lately—more specifically, ever since I met Souta-kun's parents.

"Thank you. I talk with Mother a lot when we cook, so lately we've been getting along especially well."

"Fufu, you're very welcome. I thought I might be meddling, but I'm glad I told her."

When I return, I should talk a lot with Mother... with Mama again.

Deciding that, I continued conversing with Mother-in-law.

"How are things over here? Compared to Tokyo, there aren't many stylish cafes, so I was a little worried, but..."

"I've been having a wonderful time. This is where Souta-kun grew up, after all. At the elementary school Souta-kun attended, I was able to speak with his former homeroom teacher, and I got to do plenty of shopping at the mall. Plus, I got to play with the dog who is so attached to Souta-kun."

Remembering it made my cheeks loosen into a smile.

These past few days had been especially fun, allowing me to learn so much about Souta-kun.

"Truthfully, I wanted to research the history of this region too... since I like that sort of thing."

"The libraries are closed over New Year's, after all."

"Yes, it was a pity... But in exchange, Souta-kun told me all sorts of things. About the local folklore and history."

"That boy likes that kind of thing too. Having a girl with matching hobbies become his bride is truly a blessing."

Mother-in-law's words warmed my heart. That was truly the case.

Originally, I liked Japanese history. While learning traditional Japanese dance and the like, I learned about Japan's history and found it fascinating.

That was why I had been a little anxious at first. With topics like history, there are people who enjoy it and people who don't. Of course, that doesn't mean the people who don't enjoy it are bad. It's like reading novels, reading manga, or liking sports. It's fine for each individual to enjoy what they like, and gather with fellow enthusiasts to talk. I never wanted to force something on someone who didn't like it.

That was precisely why I was genuinely glad Souta-kun liked such things too.

"Also, the movie we went to see yesterday was very interesting. Up until now, I hadn't... I watched one at home with Souta-kun and the others once, but the impact at a movie theater is truly different."

"Oh, how lovely! It reminds me of how the three of us used to go see movies together back in the day. You can watch them at home, but there's a unique enjoyment you can only get at the theater, isn't there? Did you eat popcorn?"

"Yes! I had caramel flavor, and Souta-kun had salt. Both were delicious."

"I see! That's wonderful."

Mother-in-law smiled gently and softly. Perhaps because they were family, Souta-kun's smile resembled his parents'. A very gentle, warm smile.

This home was warm. Outside... at school, Souta-kun must have experienced many painful things. There were probably many things he hadn't told his parents yet.

Even so, because he had a warm home... a warm family, I believe Souta-kun was able to keep trying his best.

...I have to make sure Souta-kun and I experience plenty of happiness together from now on.

"Mother-in-law. May I ask you something?"

"What is it? What's the matter?"

"Could you tell me what kind of seasoning Souta-kun prefers? I have a rough idea by now, but I thought you would know best, Mother-in-law."

"Fufu."

At my question, Mother-in-law let out a chuckle.

"You don't need to rush."

Then, she gently rested a hand on my head.

"You can take your time discovering it from now on. Tastes change to some extent with age, after all. Maybe right now, you have a better hold on Souta's stomach than his mother does, Nagi-chan."

"...Is that true?"

"It is. You know how they say cooking is love?"

Mother-in-law stroked my head gently and continued in a tender voice....I remembered that Souta-kun had directed that same gentle voice and gaze toward me.

"Because there is love, you go through trial and error thinking about what kind of food the other person likes, what seasonings they prefer. You want to feed them something even more delicious than before. That's why you can make delicious food."

"...Love."

At the word I murmured, Mother-in-law gave a pleased, "Yes."

"I love Souta very much too. So much that I want him to be happier than anyone else....Actually, you see. If Souta ever got a girlfriend, there was one thing I wanted to confirm."

"What would that be?"

"Whether she loves Souta even more than his mother does. If she loves him that much, I thought that boy would never be hurt in the future....Needless to say, I can clearly tell how much you love that boy, Nagi-chan."

My body reflexively jumped, and Mother-in-law turned a gentle gaze toward me as she added more. She never looked away from me.

"Your question just now is proof. You wouldn't think of that unless you loved Souta deeply."

Her words were bouncy and full of joy. I was glad my feelings of love for Souta-kun had reached her.

"Besides, back then, I was a little worried about you, Nagi-chan, but now I'm certain you'll be absolutely fine....How should I put it? Loving and being loved. Not just that, but the feeling of loving yourself has grown stronger, perhaps?"

"...!"

"Back then, I felt something vaguely close to... self-sacrifice from you, Nagi-chan. Putting Souta before yourself. Since your parents and Souta were by your side, I thought it would be fine... but I'm truly glad you seem completely okay. If it had still been going on, I would have said something myself."

"Yes. Thanks to Souta-kun, I was able to realize it. Back then, I certainly pursued only Souta-kun's happiness, but after starting over in various ways... we decided to become happy together."

What came to mind was that day, when we redid our day at the amusement park.

A sin is a sin. The fact that I hurt Souta-kun will never disappear.

However, I must not drag it around forever. That would only hinder our happiness. Just as I want Souta-kun to smile, he wants me to smile as well.

"Yes, that's a wonderful smile."

Mother-in-law even praised my softened expression. But then, her smile faded, turning serious.

"By the way, there's one thing I wanted to consult with you about, Nagi-chan..."

"What is it?"

"You know, that boy is rather timid, isn't he? I believe he'll be fine when it counts, but is he doing well?...Oh? Judging by that reaction, it looks like he's doing just fine."

At Mother-in-law's words, my shoulders gave a jolt. Even without words, it had clearly shown on my face....The fact that I was remembering last night's events.

"Does that boy say 'I love you' more often than his mother thought?"

"S-Souta-kun says he loves me very often too."

"My, my. Then there's no problem, is there?...Since you two are even closer than I thought, I'll say it once more: make sure you practice contraception properly, okay?"

"Th-That... W-We haven't done that sort of thing yet....Though, um, eventually, of course, that is the plan."

"I'm sorry, but these things are important."

"N-No. I understand that this isn't something to be embarrassed about."

Becoming pregnant as a student is truly a major issue. I had heard that at Nishizawa-san's high school last year, an upperclassman dropped out due to pregnancy. These warnings are important. Mama had told me something similar, after all.

"Hearing you say that puts me at ease....Still, unexpected things can happen with anything. When that happens, be sure to consult us, all right?"

"Of course."

The worst thing is to brood over an emergency all alone. In the unlikely event... I believe we'll be fine, but I resolved in my heart once again to always consult them if anything happened.

"Still, putting that aside."

Her serious expression vanished in an instant, and Mother-in-law smiled again.

"Once you become adults... it might be early, but if you have a child, tell us, okay? We'll definitely help."

"...Yes!"

"Fufu. I'm already looking forward to seeing my grandchild's face."

With that, we returned to cooking.

The meat and potato stew we made was delicious, earning high praise from Souta-kun and Father-in-law.

◆◆◆

"From your perspective, Nagi-chan, how has Souta been doing over there?"

After finishing the meal. Today, Souta-kun was washing the dishes with Mother-in-law. I had thought about helping, but feeling it would be wrong to interrupt parent-child time, I stayed in the living room with Father-in-law.

"He seems to enjoy every day. There's me, of course, but Makisaka-san... his friends are there as well."

I knew Souta-kun contacted his parents daily. Even so, since they could only hear it directly from Souta-kun himself, he must have been curious about how it looked from another perspective.

"I believe his friends are coming on New Year's Day, so please take a look then. Everyone is very kind and fun to be around. You'll be able to hear plenty of stories about Souta-kun from them too."

Yesterday, we received messages from Makisaka-san, Nishizawa-san, and Hayama-san saying they had successfully secured Shinkansen seats....If they hadn't been able to, Makisaka-san's older sister had intended to drive them. Even though it was quite a distance, his sister liked road trips. That said, having her drive for hours to bring them here would have been too much to ask. I was truly glad there were open seats on the Shinkansen.

At my words, Father-in-law gave an understanding nod... and narrowed his eyes as if reminiscing.

"You've heard that Souta didn't have friends in the past, right, Nagi-chan?"

"Yes, I have."

"Back in the day, he often played with his parents. Until Souta was in lower elementary school, we'd play catch at the nearby park. Even as he grew older, we went to movies and bowling."

"You got along so well with Souta-kun. Both you, Father-in-law, and Mother-in-law."

"We got along great....But looking back now, there's something I sometimes wonder."

His voice wasn't his usual cheerful tone. It carried a hint of melancholy.

"Even without friends, Souta was a boy who wasn't troubled by being alone....But I sometimes wonder if we, his parents, made him that way."

I nodded along as I listened. I didn't want to interrupt the rest of his words.

"'I have my family, so I don't need friends.'...I wonder if we planted that thought somewhere deep in Souta's heart. Having him live alone was partly to remove that mindset."

"...I see."

I spoke aloud, finally understanding. There had been other reasons for his living alone.

"That's why... I wonder if we spoiled him too much. But we just couldn't help spoiling him. Why are our own children so cute? I even got scolded by my boss at work for bragging about him every single day."

A chuckle and a breath slipped out at those words. Because I could tell that Father-in-law, just like Mother-in-law, truly loved Souta-kun deeply.

"With all those thoughts in mind... well, how should I put it? Seeing Souta make friends, and having you, Nagi-chan—his lover and fiancée—by his side, makes me so happy."

Father-in-law's eyes looked straight at me. A gaze full of endless gentleness.

"Please take good care of Souta from now on....Thinking about this past year, you've spent far more time with Souta than his mother or I have, Nagi-chan. Next year will probably be the same."

"Of course, please leave it to me. We will definitely find happiness together."

Once again, he was entrusting him to me. He must truly love and worry about Souta-kun....But putting that aside.

"I changed drastically after meeting Souta-kun."

At my sudden words, Father-in-law tilted his head. I continued.

"Touching Souta-kun's kindness, his reliability... and his considerate heart changed me. Thanks to Souta-kun, I am very happy right now....However, Souta-kun isn't the only one I must thank."

Of course, Souta-kun was the most special. However, there were countless other people I needed to thank besides Souta-kun.

"Friends like Hayama-san, Nishizawa-san, and Makisaka-san. And the maids... among them, Susaka-san could be called my second parent. And I must never forget my mother and father."

Interacting with them made me who I am today. Among them, Papa and Mama... and Susaka-san were truly special. While everyone was special in their own way, in terms of personality formation, they were especially so.

"My manner of speaking comes from Mother. The one who taught me how to put in effort was Father. The one who taught me housework and listened to my worries was Susaka-san."

The ones who shaped me until I met Souta-kun were those three. Which meant the current me exists thanks to the three of them....Ultimately, none of them could be missing.

"When I speak with Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Souta-kun's parents, I see traces of Souta-kun in you....No. It might be more accurate to say Souta-kun carries traces of the two of you."

I had talked for a bit too long. In short, what I wanted to say was this:

"Right now, not only I, but Souta-kun is happy as well. I am not the only one who created that happiness. It is thanks to Father-in-law and Mother-in-law as well."

Perhaps, as Father-in-law said, Souta-kun might have thought he didn't need friends because he had his family. However—

"The decision you and Mother-in-law made to have Souta-kun live alone was the right one. Because Souta-kun looks so happy right now, I think it was a wonderful choice."

Father-in-law's eyes widened. And then, he laughed.

"Hahaha... Thank you, Nagi-chan. You might be right. Right now, that boy is smiling. He's happy. Regretting it now is a bit silly, isn't it?"

Then, nodding repeatedly as if convinced:

"I overheard your conversation with his mother earlier... but with Souta and you, Nagi-chan, I'm sure you two will be fine no matter what happens. I'm relieved."

His voice was light, yet incredibly soft and warm.

"I intended to say this anyway, but once again... if you ever have any trouble, rely on us. Your parents, of course, Nagi-chan, but us as well."

"Yes! Of course, I intend to rely on you and consult you plenty!"

"Please do. If it's for the sake of that boy and you staying happy, Nagi-chan, we won't spare any effort."

Saying that, Father-in-law laughed heartily. Around that time, Souta-kun and the others returned, and we talked about all sorts of things once more.

◆◆◆

New Year's Eve arrived. Yesterday and today were spent finishing up homework. To be precise, we finished by this morning, and since it was New Year's Eve, Nagi and I spent a relaxing time in the room looking through photo albums.

Afterward, we ate Toshikoshi Soba for dinner, and now we were back in the room spending time together. If Nagi got sleepy, she could just go straight to sleep.

Tick, tock. The sound of the clock filled the room. At the same time, the chiming of bells from the television reached our ears.

Right beside me was Nagi.

Sitting on the bed, Nagi gently rested her hand over mine. Occasionally, she would cup my hand tenderly with both of hers, stroking the back of my hand or tickling my palm.

Sometimes, she gently lifted my hand and placed it against her cheek.

As requested, I stroked her soft, supple cheek. When I did, she let out a pleased, tiny sound. When I playfully pinched both of her cheeks with my hands, she let out an even happier sound.

There was no conversation. But it wasn't uncomfortable at all; in fact, I loved it. This kind of tranquil time.

And then—

The alarm on the smartphone placed on the desk rang, and simultaneously, the Joya no Kane reached its final strike. The year had changed.

Nagi released my hand and stood up. Straightening her back, she fixed her posture.

I also stood up to face Nagi.

"Happy New Year, Souta-kun."

"Yeah. Happy New Year, Nagi."

After bowing to each other, we met eyes, and Nagi smiled softly.

"Last year was the happiest year of my life so far, thanks to you, Souta-kun."

"Same for me. Thanks to you, Nagi, it was the most fun and happiest year."

Nagi gently brought her face closer. Embracing her back—I kissed her.

Nagi's sweet, calming scent filled my mind.

"Last year, I only got to meet you starting in September, Souta-kun. Even so, I am this happy."

"...It's only been three months, huh."

"Fufu. It feels like we've been together for about three years."

In these three months, we started dating and even became engaged. You really never know what life will bring.

From here on, the road ahead is still long. Two-thirds of our high school life remains, followed by university life... and what comes after. There will probably be tough times, but thinking of the happiness waiting ahead makes me look forward to it.

"I will make you even happier this year. Please be prepared."

"I'll do my best to make you even happier too, Nagi."

As long as I'm with Nagi, we can overcome anything. Without fail.

Following my words, Nagi pressed her cheek against mine.

Her soft, plush cheek rubbed gently against mine.

"I love you, Souta-kun. I will never, ever leave your side, no matter what happens."

"Yeah, I won't leave either. And I'll make you happy, Nagi."

"Me too. Not anyone else—I will make you happy, Souta-kun, without fail. And we will find happiness together."

I have a prior record of wrecking Nagi's marriage interview. Of course, I don't regret it... but there was no way I could say I lacked the confidence to make Nagi happy after that—nor did I feel that way in the first place.

"I love you, Nagi."

"Yes!"

I will never—let this smile cloud over.

Nagi pressed her lips to mine once more. Remaining like that, she hugged me tightly.

Before I realized it, Nagi's lips slid across my face, brushing my cheek... and rested against my earlobe.

"I love you."

Whispered like that, my entire body nearly shuddered.

Nagi pulled away and smiled as if nothing had happened.

"Fufu. Well then, shall we go give our New Year's greetings to Mother and Father?"

"Yeah, let's. After that, let's call Souichirou-san and the others."

Realizing right at the start of the new year that I couldn't win against Nagi, we headed to the living room.

◆◆◆

"Happy New Year, Nagi. Souta-kun."

"Happy New Year, Nagi. Souta-kun."

"Happy New Year, Souichirou-san, Chie-san."

"Happy New Year, Papa, Mama."

After giving New Year's greetings to my parents and making a brief call to exchange greetings with Eiji and the others, Nagi and I got on a video call with Souichirou-san and Chie-san. Apparently, it was Chie-san's suggestion. By the way, while I was exchanging New Year's greetings with Eiji and the crew, my parents had apparently called Souichirou-san to give their greetings.

We lined up chairs in front of the study desk and sat down. It felt a little cramped, but since the call wouldn't last that long, it should be fine.

On the smartphone propped up on the desk, Souichirou-san and Chie-san were visible. Judging by the angle, they were on a PC.

After greetings were exchanged... Souichirou-san was the first to speak.

"By the way, Nagi. It seems you are calling them Mother and Father. I am glad to see you are getting along well."

"Fufu. Both of them were bragging about it, you know."

"Yes. Both of them are very kind, and it's fun getting to hear all sorts of stories about Souta-kun."

Saying that, Nagi shot a quick glance in my direction....This means that, right?

This probably... means that.

"S-Souichirou-san. Chie-san."

"What is it?"

"Fufu. What might it be?"

"...May I call you Father and Mother as well?"

I had been subtly guided toward it... but seeing Nagi call my parents that, I had wanted to do the same. It was the perfect opportunity.

Just as Nagi was getting along with my parents, I wanted to get along with hers as well.

Then—Souichirou-san suddenly closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Fufu. Souichirou-san has been envious ever since Souta-kun's parents mentioned it, you know. He wanted Souta-kun to call him that too. He was fidgeting restlessly until the call came."

"Ch-Chie....I-I want to get along with Souta-kun as well....You are practically a son to me now, after all."

"Is that... how it was?"

In that case, I should have said it sooner.

Thinking that, I looked at the two of them and bowed my head.

"Well then, once again, please take care of me. Father. Mother."

"Yes. I'm counting on you, Souta-kun."

"Fufu. Please take care of us. Let's continue to get along well."

It felt like Chie-san's... no, Mother's smile had widened. No, not just Mother. Father's demeanor had softened considerably too. It probably wasn't my imagination.

"Now then. It is late, so we should not keep you too long."

"Nagi usually gets sleepy around this time, after all."

Just as Mother said, Nagi's eyes were starting to look a bit drowsy. She usually tried hard to stay awake until midnight on New Year's Eve, but she seemed to have reached her limit.

"We look forward to your visit here, Souta-kun."

"Yes. We will visit soon."

"You don't need to be so formal, you know... though it might still be a little difficult right now."

"Y-Yes. I'll do my best."

...Bit by bit. I have to learn to interact with them normally.

We're family now, after all.

"Well then, good night to you both."

"Good night."

"Yes. Good night."

"...Good night."

Nagi seemed genuinely sleepy now, her words slurring slightly.

After saying goodbye to them, we ended the call. As soon as we did, Nagi slumped against me like a marionette whose strings had been cut.

"Nagi. Ready to sleep?"

"...Nn."

Nagi shook her head slowly. She looked just like a small child.

"Since it's... a special occasion. I'll stay, awake."

"...Really?"

"Yes."

Even as she said that, her eyes were half-closed.

Letting out a wry smile, I caught her body in my arms.

"Still, we have an early morning tomorrow. Eiji and the others are supposed to arrive before noon. We're going to pick them up, right?"

"I'll go..."

...She's extremely sleepy. I'll carry her.

I slid my hands behind her knees and around her back. The bed was right there, so it should be fine.

"I'm going to lift you. Hold on to me just in case."

"O-Kay."

Nagi's hands gently rested on my clothes. But her grip was very weak. Well, it should be fine.

I nearly lost my balance for a moment while lifting her from the chair, but I managed to carry Nagi over to the bed. Leaving the lights off, I lay down beside her. Half-asleep, Nagi spread her arms.

"...Huuug."

A drowsy, sweet voice seeking affection. Yet, there was no calculation in that tone.

Like a child seeking comfort from a parent... yet slightly different from that too.

As if wanting to be pampered while simultaneously wanting to pamper me, a faint light of affection glowed in her eyes. Responding to it, I wrapped an arm around her back. I slipped my other arm under her shoulder to the back of her head, gently stroking her hair.

My fingers ran smoothly through her silky hair without snagging, and as I stroked it, Nagi's cheeks relaxed into a soft, blissful expression.

"You smell nice."

Chuckling softly at Nagi, who let out a contented murmur, I embraced her slender... yet soft body.

Thump, thump. I could hear Nagi's heartbeat. Her warmth reached me too, putting me at ease.

Hugging Nagi brought a deep sense of peace....It was strange how, depending on the situation, this could stimulate something entirely opposite in my mind.

I pulled back slightly from Nagi.

Her beautiful face was right before my eyes, her lips pursed in a tiny pout. Truly tiny.

Stroking her cheek, I overlapped our lips.

Every single time, I was amazed by how soft they were.

I wanted to stay like this forever. That was how much happiness overflowed within me.

However, I couldn't keep a sleepy Nagi going for that long.

Besides, even though it was just a brief second, my heart was more than sufficiently filled with happiness.

"Good night, Nagi."

"...Good night, Souta-kun."

And so—we welcomed the new year.

Fun, joyful, and filled with happiness. It was a wonderful beginning.

◆◆◆

"Oh, there they are."

"They've arrived."

Three figures approached from the station. Seeing them made my cheeks naturally soften into a smile.

It seemed she spotted us first and came running over.

"Nagirin, Minorin, Happy New Year! Looking forward to this year too!"

"Happy New Year, Nishizawa-san. And Hayama-san. Makisaka-san as well."

"Happy New Year, you three."

"Oh! Happy New Year!"

"Happy New Year. It's been a while since I last rode the Shinkansen."

The girl with lightly waved brown hair was Kirika Nishizawa. Eiji Makisaka's childhood friend and girlfriend.

And the girl with blonde hair tied in a ponytail was Hikaru Hayama. Nagi's friend, and my friend as well.

"Feels like it's been a while since all five of us gathered."

"Yeah, totally. We were all enjoying winter break in our own ways, after all."

After talking that far—I turned around. Toward the two who had purposely stepped back a pace.

"Dad, Mom. These three are my friends."

"Nice to meet you! I'm Eiji Makisaka, Souta's number-one friend and sole best pal! Thanks for having us!"

"I'm Kirika Nishizawa, friend of Minorin and the others, plus girlfriend to this Eiji right here! Thank you for having us for the day!"

"Nice to meet you. I'm Hikaru Hayama, friend of Minori-kun and Nagi. Thank you for having us."

Eiji and Nishizawa greeted them energetically as usual, while Hayama gave a surprisingly polite greeting. Nagi's eyes widened slightly in surprise.

"...With this hair, I gotta make a serious first impression, or it'd be bad, right?"

At Hayama's quiet murmur, Nagi smiled with understanding. Then, my surprised parents followed up with their greetings.

"Thank you for looking after Souta! I'm Souta's father! Please take good care of Souta from now on as we—ouch!"

"Dear, you're coming on too strong. Sorry about that, this man just loves Souta far too much... Ah, I'm Souta's mother. It's quite rural compared to Tokyo, but please enjoy yourselves."

"I've heard all about it from Souta, so it's totally fine! Besides, I was curious about where Souta used to live, so I'm really looking forward to this!"

...I'm glad I told Eiji and the others in advance that my parents were doting fools.

"I'm glad to hear that. Also, if you'd like, could you tell me some stories about Souta while we're on the move or whenever you have free time?"

"Abso-freakin'-lutely! Eiji and I are super indebted to Minorin!"

"I'm pretty indebted to him too, so I can tell you plenty."

At their words, Mom showed a beaming smile, while Dad started crying... and before anyone could be creeped out, Mom landed another chop to stop Dad's tears.

◆◆◆

"Ta-da! How is it, how is it?! Does it suit me?"

"Oh, looking good. How about mine?"

"As expected of my boyfriend! Looks great on you!"

After arriving home and eating a slightly early lunch. Since it was Hatsumode... we changed into furisode and hakama.

"Sorry they're hand-me-downs."

"No, thank you very much. They're so cute."

The kimonos Hayama and Nishizawa were wearing were from when Mom was young. They were well-maintained.

And the hakama Eiji and I wore belonged to Dad....Dad hadn't built up so much muscle back then, so the fit was just right.

And Nagi had brought her own kimono. Well, the products sold by Souichirou-san... Father's company were centered around kimonos, after all.

"Souta-kun, you look so very cool."

"Thanks. It looks amazing on you too, Nagi. You're beautiful."

Nagi wasn't wearing the kimono from her performance... Today, she wore a furisode with peony flowers depicted over a pale sky-blue base. Her hair was tied up in a bun secured with a kanzashi.

"It suits you too, Hayama."

"Thanks....It's my first time wearing a kimono, and it's pretty amazing. Thanks for helping me out, Nagi."

"You're very welcome. I'm so used to it by now that I could probably dress someone with my eyes closed."

Nagi had helped Hayama and Nishizawa put on their kimonos. Dad had helped Eiji and me.

By the way, Hayama wore a white furisode centered around chrysanthemums, while Nishizawa wore a red-based furisode patterned with cherry blossoms.

"How lovely! Since we're all dressed up, mind if I take a photo at the entrance?"

"Yeah....That's fine with everyone, right?"

"Of course."

"Totally!"

"Oh, sounds good."

"Nice."

And so we moved to the entrance hall. There, we lined up.

Me in the middle, with Nagi and Eiji on either side. Nishizawa stood next to Eiji, and Hayama stood next to Nagi.

Watching us, Mom readied the camera—then lowered it once. Taking out a handkerchief, Mom wiped the corners of her eyes. The sudden gesture startled me.

"...Mom?"

"Sorry, I'm just getting old....I'm just so happy. To think... well, saying 'to think' isn't right. I knew this day would come eventually, but I'm even happier than I imagined."

Beside Mom, Dad smiled....I always think that this part of him is so typical of Dad.

"Dad is super happy too, Souta. To be surrounded by so many friends..."

...This is intensely embarrassing. Having this said in front of Eiji and the others.

However, it wasn't like I didn't know how much Mom and Dad had worried about me. Besides, I knew my friends weren't the type to tease me at a time like this.

"Because Eiji and the others are here, every day has been fun lately."

My face felt hot. But since Eiji and the others had gone through the trouble of coming all this way, I wanted to say it.

"At school, having Eiji around makes it fun, completely unlike elementary and middle school. With Nishizawa and Hayama too, studying together is always lively and fun. I'm glad Mom and Dad rented a spacious apartment so I could invite friends over....And Nagi is there too. Lately, she comes over to stay on weekends, and even on other days, we call each other often. That's why I'm enjoying every single day."

"...I see. That's wonderful, Souta."

My face burned—but Nagi smiled beside me and held my hand. When I timidly glanced over, Eiji and the others were smiling too.

"I have fun too, man. I never get bored hanging around you. Especially lately."

"You teaching me study stuff has been a huge lifesaver for me too! No, like, seriously for real. If Minorin and Nagirin weren't around, there was a high chance I would've been held back a year! Dragging Eiji down with me!"

"I have fun too. Never getting bored—that's really true. Compared to those two, it hasn't been that long since we started talking... but you're way easier to deal with than other guys, and since you have a girlfriend, I don't have to worry about weird stuff."

Their words made my cheeks burn even hotter... but I was undeniably happy.

"...So, that's how it is."

"Dad is happy too. To see you make so many great friends."

Saying that, Dad took the camera in Mom's place.

"All right, Dad will take it! Everyone ready?!"

"Yeah, anytime."

"Alrighty, here we go! Say cheese!"

◆◆◆

"...Sorry for dragging you guys along to all that."

"What're you talking about? Having nice parents is great. Plus, we got treated to a meal!"

"And we got to borrow furisode too! The food was delicious! Also, your mom is really pretty, and what was up with your dad's height and muscles? Insane!"

"I get that. But they were super nice people. I could totally feel how much they love you, Minori-kun."

After taking the photos, we were on our way to Hatsumode.

"They asked us all kinds of stuff while we ate lunch. Wonder what I should tell them about Minorin tonight! Ah, should I tell that story? The one where you two went to eat parfaits together."

"That sounds like a surefire way to plant some kind of distrust in my parents."

"Ah, but wouldn't that work? From there leading into Shinonome coming to pick you up on a rainy day... Knowing Souta, you probably haven't told them, right?"

"You're on that side too? I mean, I definitely haven't told them, but still."

As I sighed at the two of them getting carried away... Hayama grinned slyly.

"Then maybe I'll tell that story. The one where I peeked into the kitchen and saw Minori-kun patting Nagi's head and hugging her."

"Huh?!"

"Whoa, whoa, hold up! What is that? That's news to me!"

"News to me too! Hmm? Souta. What's the meaning of this?"

"...This just got complicated."

Both Nagi and I had noticed when I patted her head, but we hadn't noticed her seeing the hug.

Hayama was grinning with a triumphant expression....Well, I suppose this much was fine for my parents to hear.

As we walked while talking like that, we arrived at the shrine. Then, Eiji and the others' faces twitched.

"...Aren't there way too many people?"

"This is pretty much the only famous shrine around here. Because of that, all the local residents come here to pray."

"I see... Well, let's just wait patiently! It's not like we'll have to wait two or three hours anyway."

The visit itself wouldn't take that long, so we wouldn't be waiting that much. Time would pass quickly if we chatted.

The only thing was... with so many people, I was anxious about running into them. Well, conversely, with so many people, they wouldn't easily spot us. Even if they did, the crowd would act as a wall preventing them from picking a fight.

"Oh yeah, oh yeah! You two! What was with that cute doggie?! Super adorable!"

"Hm? Ah, you mean Haku?"

"Its name is Haku-chan?! What was with that fluffiness! That was an outrageously criminal level of fluffiness!"

"Fufu. Adorable, isn't it? Fluffy and soft, and smelling just like the sun."

"So jealous! Hey, hey, after we finish Hatsumode, can we go see that dog?"

"Haku?...I wonder. I know where the owner, Shirayama-san, lives. Or maybe we'll run into them on their walk route."

"I won't stop you from going, Kirika, but you have to change clothes first. They're borrowed, after all."

"Oh, right! Gotta sprint back and change once we're done!"

"...They might be busy over there, so give up if that's the case, okay?"

"Totally!"

Shirayama-san might be visiting relatives, or their house might be the gathering spot. If so, it couldn't be helped.

"...A dog, huh."

"Hayama-san, do you not like dogs?"

"Hm? Nah, I like 'em. Just remembered the one my grandpa used to have back in the day. Crossed the rainbow bridge when I was in elementary school, though."

"Is that so... I'm sorry, Hayama-san."

"Don't apologize. I was just getting a little sentimental, that's all."

Hayama smiled at Nagi's words. Then, she stared intently at Nagi.

"By the way. There's one thing I wanted to ask you, Nagi."

"What is it?"

"How long are you gonna keep calling me by my last name with '-san'?"

"...!"

Come to think of it, Nagi was still calling Hayama with "-san." Setting aside the "-san"... using her last name was something I had been slightly curious about too.

"Well, you probably just lost track of the timing, simply put. Call me by my first name....If possible, dropping the '-san' would make me happy too. Feels kinda distant otherwise."

"Oho! Look at Hikarun saying such cute things! But I was curious about that too! Nagirin. And Minorin as well!"

"Me too?"

An unexpected stray bullet flew my way. I reflexively asked back.

"Yeah, 'cause I call you Minorin, right?"

"...Doesn't that count as using my last name?"

"I mean, maybe, but 'Souta' is kinda hard to make a nickname out of. Would 'Aorin' be okay with you?"

"...Nobody would know who you're talking about, and it completely loses its original form."

Come to think of it, I remember Nishizawa struggling with what to call me in the beginning. Normally, people would use first names, like with Nagi and Hayama.

"Then using this chance, why don't we all call each other by our first names? It's not like anyone minds, right?"

"I'm down. Super down."

"Well, if we leave it like this, the last-name thing will probably stick for good."

Hearing their thoughts, I gave a thoughtful nod. They had a point.

"Let's do that."

"Um, yes. In that case—Hikaru-chan and Kirika-chan. For Eiji... '-san' feels easier to say, but how is that?"

"Hm? Oh. Calling me the same way as Souta would feel weird anyway....I'll call you Nagi-san and Hikaru-san."

"It's rare for you to use '-san.'"

At the very least, I had never heard Eiji use "-san" for anyone. Eiji laughed at my words.

"Aside from Kirika, I basically use last names for girls, you know."

"On the other hand, Eiji is special to me, which is why I use his first name!"

"...Come to think of it, that's true."

I recall Nishizawa mentioning that she gave nicknames to people she wanted to get close to. Considering she didn't use a nickname for Eiji precisely because he was her childhood friend and boyfriend, that certainly felt special.

"Well, I'm good with that. What about you, Nagi?"

"I'm fine with it too. Which means Hikaru-chan..."

"The two I wasn't calling by first names were those two. I'll call you Souta and Eiji."

"Oh, of course."

"Fine by me too."

Since Nishizawa used nicknames for everyone except Eiji, the way she addressed people probably wouldn't change. Which left—me.

"Then for me... I can call you Kirika and Hikaru, right?"

"Oh! Finally!"

"All good."

And so, our ways of addressing each other were renewed. It felt a little strange, but we'd get used to it quickly.

While we talked, the line moved forward....Then, Hikaru looked around at our surroundings.

"Still, we're standing out quite a bit, aren't we?"

"Well, most people come to Hatsumode in regular clothes, after all! Even without that, our group's visual score is pretty high? Full of cute girls and handsome guys, right?"

"Isn't it just because Kirika's voice is loud?"

"Oh? You said it now! Want me to shut this noisy mouth of mine for you?"

"What kind of threat is that...? My bad. My bad, so stop leaning your face in silently. It's cute, dammit."

"Ehehe~"

"...Suddenly started flirting, didn't you?"

"You're the absolute last person I wanna hear that from!"

That said, Kirika had a point. Nagi, of course, but Kirika and Hikaru were also remarkably pretty girls. Beautiful girls wearing furisode—naturally, they'd stand out.

On top of that, Eiji was good-looking too. Combined with his cheerful personality, he probably had plenty of admirers. Not that he ever looked very happy when girls talked to him. Eiji was entirely devoted to Kirika, after all.

"...Standing out, huh."

"Souta-kun."

"No, I'm fine. Doesn't look like they're around here."

Since I had told Nagi about them, she seemed to have grasped what I was thinking.

"Did something happen?"

"...I'd like to say it's nothing. But maybe I should tell you guys."

I didn't want to say it... or rather, it wasn't something I usually shared with people. It wasn't a pleasant topic. However, having everyone suffer an unpleasant experience because of it would be the worst outcome.

"Up through middle school... ah. It wasn't quite bullying, but I was frequently teased by a portion of the students."

At my words, Kirika raised an eyebrow, and Eiji's expression switched to a serious one.

"...Give me the details."

"Huh? N-No. I'll just give you the gist. It's not a fun story, after all."

"...My bad. Said that reflexively."

"It's fine. Well, simply put, they teased me for being a loner... or acting like I was girl-crazy."

From there, I briefly explained the background. How I stood out during sports day in elementary school and girls talked to me for a short period afterward. How people who resented that teased me rather harshly. And how I ran into them recently and saw they hadn't changed at all.

"So that's how it is. I think we'll be fine, but if they spot us... well, yeah. I'll just hide behind Eiji."

"Yeah, you do that."

Eiji said with a furrow between his brows. His voice, several tones lower than usual, startled me a bit.

"Eiji hates guys like that the most. Me too, of course."

"I hate them too. Like, being jealous of someone and making fun of them—that's straight-up bullying, isn't it? It's genuinely disgusting, so I hate it."

Hearing their words made my heart feel a little lighter. Beside me, Nagi held my hand the entire time.

"Well, not running into them is best, but just in case."

"...Yeah. Thanks for telling us."

"Eiji, your face looks scary. Save that face for when we actually run into them."

Reaching from behind Eiji, Kirika squished and kneaded Eiji's cheeks.

"Yeah. At least while we're in this crowd, we should be fine during Hatsumode."

"...Well, that's true."

Even if they spotted us in this crowd, they couldn't approach. Which meant... we'd need to be on guard once we finished.

Since the mood had grown slightly heavy, we changed the topic from there. We talked about what everyone had been doing over winter break.

I mentioned visiting the elementary school with Nagi and running into my former homeroom teacher, and going shopping for clothes together.

Eiji and the others had their own stories: on the first day of winter break, they went to karaoke in the morning on a free-time pass, singing until they pushed their limits and almost ruined their throats, or winning heaps of plushies at the arcade's crane games. They also talked about visiting a dog cafe after seeing the photo we took with Haku. Apparently, Hikaru had tagged along for most of that.

While chatting about such things, the line moved forward—and it was almost time for us to pray.

"What should I wish for this year? 'May I eat lots of delicious food,' maybe?"

"Is that really something you ask a god for?"

"Oh? Then what are you wishing for, Hikarun?"

"Me...? Well. Like, 'hope a good guy shows up'? My luck with guys is pretty bad. Guys who only look at appearances tend to approach me. Though looking like this is partly why, so it's half my own fault, probably."

"I think someone wonderful will appear before long, Hikaru-chan."

Nagi replied with a smile to Hikaru's words. Kirika energetically chimed in with, "Totally!" Hearing that... Hikaru blushed slightly and smiled.

"Well, either way is fine, really. I'm comfortable with this group right now anyway."

"Mmh! Hikarun, you say the sweetest things!"

"Whoa, wait, hugging me out of nowhere scares me!"

Kirika hugged Hikaru happily. And Hikaru didn't seem to mind it either.

"Fufu. You two get along so well."

"Nagirin, wanna hug too?"

"Later, okay? It's time to pray."

At Nagi's words, the two looked forward just as the people ahead finished their prayer.

"Sorry, sorry. Let's do it then. Who's ringing the bell?"

"Souta, you wanna do it?"

"Me?...Sure, I guess."

Though suddenly nominated, spending time hesitating here would inconvenience the people behind us. Since no one else seemed eager, I ended up ringing the bell.

Then, tossing in the offering, two bows, two claps. And silently making a wish in my heart. I had already decided what to wish for.

May everyone stay healthy without falling ill this year. And... may I spend another year together with Nagi and the others, without any major trouble or misfortune.

Minor troubles could probably be overcome together with Nagi and the crew. But when it came to troubles beyond that, there was nothing to do but ask the gods.

Bowing once more, I glanced to the side to see Nagi still praying with her eyes closed.

Her eyelashes were long, standing out even more noticeably with her eyes shut.

Of course, I loved her usual expressions where her emotions were clearly visible.

However, seeing her pray like this with closed eyes was—beautiful. Truly.

Combined with the kimono that suited her so well, it looked ethereal.

After watching her for a short while, she finished her prayer and bowed.

"...What's wrong?"

"No... just thought you looked beautiful again. Let's move along for now."

Eiji and the others seemed to have finished praying as well, so we stepped aside into the side walkway. Then, Nagi asked happily:

"Fufu. What did you wish for, Souta-kun?"

"May no one fall ill. And may no big trouble happen... so I can stay together with you and the others. What about you, Nagi?"

"Along with a prayer, I was offering thanks."

"Thanks?"

Nagi gave a lively, "Yes."

"Thanks for letting me meet you, Souta-kun. Last year, you and the others helped me so much, but in the first place, if I hadn't met you, Souta-kun... I wouldn't have been able to spend such a happy year."

"...That's true. I have to give thanks for being able to meet you, Nagi, and everyone else too."

Nagi, of course, but Eiji and the others as well. I truly had to be grateful.

"Aside from that, just like you, Souta-kun, I prayed that there would be no illness or trouble."

Then, a chuckle escaped her lips.

"I debated whether to pray for you to live happily, Souta-kun... but I decided against it. Because the one who will make you happy isn't a god, but me."

"...You're right. And the one who will make you happy is me, Nagi."

While we talked like that, Kirika and the others were staring at us with half-lidded eyes, so I cut it short there.

"S-So, what did you guys end up wishing for, Eiji?"

"Me...? Good connections, I guess? I'm looking for a part-time job right now, so something like wishing to find a good one. I worked part-time at my sister's place occasionally, but relying on family forever isn't great."

"I wished to eat tons of delicious food!"

"I just wished to maintain the status quo, pretty much. Like, hoping the five of us can spend this year together too. Plus good romantic luck, maybe."

"Fufu. Those are wonderful wishes."

Wishes typical of the three of them. Hoping the five of us... maybe the group might grow, but for now, I wanted to keep this circle intact.

Also, Eiji's words made me think a bit.

...A part-time job. Maybe I should look for one too. I'd probably be going out to various places with Nagi from now on, so expenses would come up....There would be occasions to buy presents and such, after all.

While thinking about that, the five of us followed the signs forward. Soon, we reached the amulet office where omikuji and charms were sold.

"I think I'll buy a charm."

There was a line, but since it was just purchasing, it wouldn't take as long as praying. I murmured that, but at my words, Kirika grinned slyly.

"Oho? Gonna buy one? Gonna buy one for fertility or safe childbirth? Nagirin did say she wanted kids, after all!"

"K-Kirika-chan! Th-That was just a slip of the tongue!"

Nagi's face turned bright red. Come to think of it... around the time I started dating Nagi, she had gone a bit out of control and said something like that.

"G-Geez! I won't teach you your studies this year!"

"I'm so sorry, anything but that, please forgive me..."

"I'm not one to talk, but study a bit more regularly, will ya?"

I couldn't help laughing at their exchange. Hikaru chuckled softly beside Nagi as well.

Afterward, we bought charms. Charms for sound health and, for my parents, family safety. Nagi bought the same ones.

Eiji got one for increasing wealth, Kirika for academic success, and Hikaru for good matches....Kirika tried to buy a marital harmony charm for us, but I politely declined. I felt that buying one before actually becoming husband and wife might bring the opposite of blessings.

Then, as a test of luck, we all drew omikuji.

"Oh! I got Great Blessing!"

"I got Middle Blessing! Lost to Eiji!"

"I got Small Blessing....Feels pretty average, I guess?"

"I got Future Blessing. Souta-kun, what about you—"

Nagi asked, and with a wry smile, I showed the result of my omikuji.

"...Misfortune."

"...Wait, seriously? Misfortune? It's my first time seeing one."

"Whoa... Mind if I see? Ah, but the contents don't look that bad?"

It was my first time drawing one too. Everyone looked over the details.

...Awaited person and marriage prospects were written as "Near at hand," so that looked fine. Academics was "Must exert effort." The rest didn't look terrible either... but one item caught my eye.

"'Disputes: Danger at the start,' huh."

"Hard to imagine you getting into a fight though, Souta. Probably don't need to worry about it, right?"

"Illness says 'Must be cautious'... but you wash your hands and gargle properly, so you'll be fine. Besides, you have us."

"Well, yeah. They say sickness begins in the mind anyway, so I'll just keep it in the back of my head."

"Totally, totally! Mine even says 'Exert great effort' for academics! Don't sweat it, don't sweat it!"

"Hey, Kirika, you better exert effort for real, okay? You probably have term-end exams next month too, right?"

"Ugh... Don't remind me. I'll do my assignments when I get home. Um, Nagirin..."

"Fufu. Let's hold a study session once winter break ends."

Nagi smiled and took my hand.

"You have everyone with you, so you'll be fine, Souta-kun."

"...Yeah. Thanks."

"You're very welcome."

The omikuji result wasn't great... but I felt saved by Nagi and the others' words.

However, I would soon learn that the omikuji had been completely accurate.

"—Ngh."

Right after stepping out of the shrine, my feet stopped dead. Seeing me freeze abruptly, Eiji furrowed his brows.

"What's wrong? Are they here?"

"...Yeah. Sorry, Eiji."

Eiji gave a firm nod and cast his gaze around.

"Alright. Stay here. Which ones?"

Saying that, he let me hide in his shadow. Kirika told Nagi to hide behind her as well.

"The group of five walking from further down."

"...Those guys, huh. Walking five abreast—that's quite an arrogant way to walk."

"I see. You see that type sometimes, so they're that kind, huh."

The guys walking abreast from further down the road. They were spilling way out into the roadway, but showed no signs of caring. They walked as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"Well, as long as the two who stand out stay hidden, it shouldn't be a problem. With Eiji around, they probably won't try to hit on us either."

"True. Assuming they have basic common sense, that is."

We continued moving forward slowly. The other group was on the opposite side across the road, but this wasn't a main avenue; it was a narrow side street. There wasn't even a traffic light, meaning they could easily cross over unless cars were passing.

Thump, thump. My heart pounded heavily. A faint nausea crept up.

...It'll be fine. As long as they don't spot me, they won't talk to us... hopefully.

Eiji, Kirika, and Hikaru walked in a way that shielded us. Thanks to that, Nagi and I shouldn't be visible from their side.

Because we couldn't be seen, it should be fine. Yet the words from earlier's omikuji flickered stubbornly in my mind.

—Disputes: Danger at the start.

"Excuse me~! Miss, you dropped this~"

"Hm?"

Patter, patter. One guy came running across the road. Heading slightly behind us... he picked something up, approached—and spoke to Hikaru. He held out a piece of cloth... like a handkerchief.

"...Uh, that's not mine."

"Huh~? Then did someone else drop it~?"

Eiji exchanged glances with Kirika. Shifting slightly, they moved to make us harder to see... though completely concealing us from front and back was difficult.

"By the way, you're super pretty, miss~ Heading back from Hatsumode?"

"Ah—yeah. Sorry, we're in a hurry."

"Come on now, a little bit's fine, isn't it? I kinda fell for you at first sight, miss."

"Oho, what's going on over here?"

Matching his words, the rest of the guys crossed over as well... An unmistakable pickup attempt.

Eiji clicked his tongue softly. Even so, he tried to shield me... but with them getting this close, there was no way we wouldn't be noticed.

"Wait, hold on, the girl in the back is crazy cute... Huh? Minori?"

"...Souta. Stay back."

Eiji murmured softly. Then he stepped in front of me.

"Huh? For real, it's Minori."

"Wait, why's he with such cute girls? What the?"

"Got some business with my buddy?"

Amid the tense atmosphere, Eiji threw words back at them without flinching.

"Business? Ah—business, I guess? Mind lending us those girls? We won't treat 'em bad."

"...We have places to be, so that's a hard pass."

"Come on, don't be so stiff. Hey, you girls don't need to be so wary either. We're like his... uh~ friends? Something like that, see?"

Grit. The sound of grinding teeth echoed. For a moment, I thought I had done it without realizing—but I was wrong.

Nagi was gritting her teeth hard. Her hand holding mine was clenched tightly, turning pale.

"In that case, I take priority. Since I'm his best friend."

"...Huh? Best friend?"

At Eiji's irritated, spit-out words—they echoed the term back.

And then, they laughed. As if they had just heard a hilarious joke.

"Pfft... kuku, hahaha! Best friend, a best friend, huh! True, that guy's pretty useful, after all!"

"...What are you talking about?"

"I get it! That guy's super useful after skipping class, right? Since he's a serious goody-two-shoes, he takes all the notes, and he does all the workbooks dutifully!"

"Ain't it that? If you become his best friend, he treats you to all kinds of stuff, right? Look, his family seems pretty loaded, after all."

"Right on! He's got three girls with him too, all insanely gorgeous. A girl-crazy guy would gladly shell out cash for that!"

As they rambled on, Eiji looked at them as if staring at something utterly incomprehensible.

...No, not just Eiji. Kirika and Hikaru—and Nagi too. Brows furrowed, they glared at the group.

"...You bastards."

"Wait, what? Are you seriously his best friend... best friends with a guy like that? Kuku, wait, for real?"

"No way in hell! Hey, Minori-kun, you didn't say a word the other day either, right? And you're staying dead quiet today too! Say something, why don't ya? Come on, tell 'em we're friends~"

"—Please stop this foolishness at once."

A voice so cold it felt like the very air would freeze.

"Listening to you carry on without restraint, displaying such insolence without even realizing your own shameful behavior... Every single thing you do gets on my nerves."

"Oho, quite the mouth on you! Though I barely understand half of what you're saying."

"Hey, instead of hanging around a goody-two-shoes like him, why not come with us? It'd be way more fu—"

"I refuse."

Even so, whether they realized Nagi was furious or not... they wore smirking, shallow grins.

"You're harsh, but you're seriously cute. What's your name?"

"I have no name to give to someone lacking basic manners. However, let me make this clear."

Nagi stepped in front of me. Gripping my hand firmly.

"I am his—Souta-kun's lover. And his fiancée....I will not tolerate you insulting him any further."

"...Whoa, whoa. You're kidding, right? With a boring piece of trash like him?"

"Did you not hear my words?"

One of the guys visibly shuddered. That was how chilling her voice was.

"Just to be sure, I will repeat myself. I will not forgive any insult directed at him."

"I won't let this slide any further either."

Nagi and Eiji glared at them as they spoke....Hearing their words and seeing their actions, the fear rooted deep in my heart began to peel away bit by bit.

"Wh-What's your deal? Dammit."

"Can't do anything on your own, so you gotta rely on others?"

"...You bastard."

"Eiji."

I called his name. The name of my best friend, who was getting angry on my behalf.

When I called him, he hesitated for a moment before stepping back from advancing on them.

"Nagi, thank you too."

Then I looked at Nagi. Her blue eyes gazed steadily into mine—and she gave a firm nod.

I remembered that night. The day I spoke with my parents.

Having Nagi and Eiji get angry for me made me incredibly happy....However, I had my own pride as a man.

"As Nagi's fiancé, I don't want to show an unsightly side of myself."

"Huh? Wh-What, you wanna go? You, who can't do anything without friends?"

"Yeah. It's true that I couldn't do anything without friends."

He might have said it as a taunt. But that was the truth.

"The current me isn't alone anymore....I'm no longer the me of the past."

I directed those words at them—and at myself.

"Sorry about that. The truth is, I'm not a loner anymore. I enjoy every single day now."

"Ha! S-So what if you do?!"

"Asking 'so what' makes it hard to answer."

What did I want to say to them? What did I want to convey?

...Well, if I had to say:

"Right now, I'm living happily."

"Huh? What's with you all of a sudden?"

"There was just one thing that kept bothering my mind....I worried that if I met you guys, I'd get scared all over again. In fact, I was scared. When we ran into each other at the park the other day, too....And because of that, I felt frustrated."

Frustrated at myself for being unable to say anything back. If I hadn't run into them again like this, it probably would have remained a lifelong regret.

"Thank you. Thanks to you guys, I was able to remember that I have friends I can rely on, and family I can rely on."

"H-Hah?! Are you mocking us?!"

"I mean it from the bottom of my heart....I'm no longer the me you guys made fun of back then. I'm not the me who couldn't say anything back."

Different from back then, and different from the me of a few days ago. Right in this moment, I felt absolute certainty.

"Wh-What are you talking about?! You were alone the whole time, drooling over girls—"

"I'm not alone anymore. I was never drooling over anyone either... but now, I have someone precious to me."

I looked at Nagi. The thorns had melted from her expression, and looking at me, her cheeks softened slightly.

"I won't run or hide anymore. In order to become the cool, reliable person I want to be."

"Wh-What kind of gibberish are you spouting?! You... you gloomy bastard!"

At his words—Kirika let out an exasperated laugh.

"Gloomy, huh? Lately, people talk to Minorin all the time at school, though. It's not like he can't talk to people."

"Y-You... You ugly-ass face!"

At his next words, this time Hikaru wore an exasperated look.

"...Uh, I think his visuals are actually pretty good, though? Nagi told me, but lately he's been taking care of his skincare, his hair is neat, and isn't he totally a refreshing handsome guy?"

"Guh... Y-You small fry!"

And finally, Eiji let out an exasperated sigh.

"That's an insult not even an elementary schooler would use. Small fry? What even is 'small fry'? Sounds like nothing but sore-loser talk to me."

"Wh-What did you say?! Y-You skinny scrawny twig!"

And at the very end, Nagi laughed.

"You really haven't looked at the current Souta-kun at all, have you? Souta-kun has quite a lot of muscle now. Having seen and touched it several times, I know."

"H-Hah?!"

At Nagi's words, the guy was visibly shaken. The rest of his group looked the same, their eyes darting wildly.

Then, his shoulders trembling in agitation—he raised a fist.

"Y-You guys, don't you make fools out of u—"

"The one who was making fun... no, trying to make fun of someone, was you."

Before that fist could swing down, I grabbed his wrist, stopping it.

"Y-You bastard, what do you think you're doing?! Hey, guys!"

"...Oh, what's this? If you wanna go, I'll be your opponent."

When he called out to his companions, Eiji took a fighting stance....He looked remarkably experienced.

"My bad, Kirika. Might end up breaking our promise."

"Go ahead! If they try something, take 'em down! Just so you know, Eiji can easily handle five guys, no problem!"

"Hell yeah. I've taken on about ten guys before, after all."

"More news to me just popped up... But seriously, are you really gonna do this? We're in front of the shrine, and there are tons of people around."

Though we had walked a bit, the shrine was still visible, and Hatsumode visitors were staring in our direction. If this turned into any more of a commotion, someone would probably call the police. Not that we had done anything wrong, so we'd be fine regardless.

"...Tch."

Clicking his tongue, he shook off my grip.

"Forget it, forget it! We're leaving!"

"H-Hey. You cool with this? Letting Minori push you around like that?"

"Shut up! Don't you ever say that guy's name again!"

Stomping loudly against the ground, they walked away.

Watching them until they disappeared from sight—I let out a long breath.

"...That helped a lot. Thank you, everyone."

"Fufu. Good work, Souta-kun. You were very cool."

"Yeah... Sorry, Nagi, I was gripping your hand pretty hard."

"This much is nothing at all."

I had been gripping Nagi's hand tightly as well, turning her hand pale. When I hurriedly let go, color quickly returned to her skin.

"I feel refreshed too."

"Oh! Both of you were super cool at the end!"

"Yeah. Was a bit scared it might escalate, though."

Eiji, Kirika, and Hikaru smiled warmly one after another. Thanks to them, I had found the strength to stand tall.

"Eiji. Seriously, thank you. You were a huge reassurance."

"Yeah, you're welcome."

"Kirika and Hikaru, thank you for talking back to them too."

"I mean, everything they said was totally off the mark anyway! But in times like this, you say 'you're welcome,' right?"

"Then you're welcome from me too. Seeing them run off with their tails between their legs felt super satisfying."

Smiling at their words, I looked back at Nagi once more.

"Thank you, Nagi. For staying by my side....Though I made you go through something scary. I'm sorry."

"I'll say you're welcome too. But I wasn't scared at all, you know. Because I believed you would protect me, Souta-kun."

Then, Nagi held my hand again.

"You really did your very best, Souta-kun. I'm so proud of you."

"...I'm your fiancé, after all."

"Yes! Fufu, my fiancé that I'm so proud of!"

From now on... of course, I knew I shouldn't obsess over it too much.

I'll do my best. So I can continue being a fiancé Nagi can be proud of.

"So cute~! So fluffy~!"

"...Cute."

"Fufu. Very cute, isn't it?"

After finishing Hatsumode, returning home, and changing clothes. As promised, we went looking for Haku... and successfully managed to run into them.

"Thank you very much, Shirayama-san. For letting us interrupt your walk so suddenly."

"Not at all, not at all. Souta-kun's friends are always welcome! Still, what an amazing group of beauties and handsome young men. Including Souta-kun, of course."

"Ah, thank you very much."

Being included in that group was a bit humbling, but... putting that aside, I watched the three of them playing with Haku. Seeing them have fun was the best part.

Then, I stepped closer to Eiji, who was watching the three beside me. Lowering my voice so as not to disturb them, I spoke.

"Eiji....If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine, but could I ask about earlier?"

"Hm? Ah... earlier, huh. Give me a sec."

After thinking for a moment, Eiji looked over at the three... at Kirika.

"Kirika."

"What is it~? What's up?"

"Can I tell Souta?"

"Go ahead. About that, right?"

It seemed to involve Kirika. He had mentioned a promise, after all.

"To be blunt, Kirika was a kid who got bullied a lot back in the day."

"...Really?"

"Yeah. Back then, she was gloomier than now, and had few friends. And I haven't changed much since back then. Actually, I was even more at the center of the class than now. Had lots of friends, and though I say so myself, was pretty popular....Despite being popular, I was close with a girl who didn't stand out in class. Lots of girls resented that and picked fights with Kirika."

"...I see."

Eiji spoke while gazing into the distance. Come to think of it, when I mentioned being teased like bullying earlier, Kirika's reaction had been strong....So that was why.

"Of course, I stopped it every time I caught it. But back in middle school... there was a period when a pretty troublesome girl set her sights on me. Her older brother was a delinquent, and he had lots of rough friends."

"...Which means what you said earlier was...?"

"Yeah. Really nothing to brag about, but that girl had feelings for me. When I rejected her, I ended up fighting about ten guys. Got battered to hell, but somehow knocked 'em all down. It became an issue at school, but naturally, looking at the situation, the other side was ruled in the wrong....Still, I got pretty heavily injured."

Eiji smiled nostalgically. But in that smile, a shade closer to self-mockery was visible.

"Made Kirika worry like crazy. She said while part of it was unavoidable, she wished I wouldn't get hurt from now on....Well, after all that happened, Kirika and I started dating."

"...I see. So that was the catalyst."

"Yeah. Kirika starting to become the way she is now was because of that too. So she wouldn't get bullied. And I promised not to get into fistfights anymore either. Almost broke it earlier, but that was an emergency."

The dots connected into a line. However, that brought up a new question.

"Then why go to different high schools?"

"...Ah. Simply put, academic ability was one reason. Kirika was serious like you are now, but she was just really bad at studying. Probably didn't know how to study properly. Lately, she seems to be doing pretty well with her studies, actually. Thanks to you guys, Souta."

"No, I think it's because Kirika is putting in the effort too."

"Well, of course. But I couldn't manage to help her like that. Thanks."

"...You're welcome."

Accepting his thanks obediently, Eiji laughed. After smiling for a moment in the lingering afterglow, the conversation resumed.

"And there was one more reason. We spent so much time together, it became almost like a codependency. She told me we should make super close friends."

"I see. It's hard to imagine you two not having super close friends, but that definitely sounds like something Kirika would say."

I had seen Eiji and Kirika's affectionate relationship many times before. An equal relationship where both respected each other was pleasant to watch.

That too was likely because Kirika put in the effort. Of course, Eiji must have put in just as much effort without losing to her.

"So that's why I'm pretty used to fighting."

"If it's for the sake of protecting someone precious, I won't deny it. In fact, I think it's amazing."

"Thanks....Still, the current me can basically handle things before anything happens. Back then, I thought as long as I solved it in the end, that was enough."

Eiji's words made me remember that day.

Before anything happens—indeed, Nagi's situation was resolved right before the worst could happen, all thanks to Eiji. Taking the trouble to call to ask about the result, and coming all the way to my house when I didn't pick up... was likely what he envisioned as the best approach. And the worst was avoided.

"...I feel like I'm starting to understand you better, Eiji."

"I've come to understand you better too, Souta. Like why I was able to get along with you so well. My intuition turned into certainty."

"Why's that?"

"Because you're similar to a certain someone—to Kirika."

Eiji gave a small laugh, yet turned a steady gaze toward me.

"After going through so much with Kirika, I thought about it over and over. Why does someone who lives earnestly and tries their best every single day have to suffer awful things?"

"...!"

"This world is unreasonable. It's full of crap. I know that much. I know it, but I refuse to accept it....At least, not around me."

Phew. Eiji let out a breath. As if exhaling his reignited anger along with it.

"I like you as a person. You don't stand out much at school, but I see your subtle consideration and kindness clearly. Doing chores the day-duty student forgot, stepping in to attend committee meetings when a student was absent. I even know you watered the flowers when the beautification committee forgot and they were withering."

"Y-You're watching pretty closely, aren't you?"

"Yeah. That's why I hated it. Seeing you suffer unreasonable treatment."

Then, his expression softened again.

"Because of what happened in the past, I thought about keeping the friends I get close to... truly close to, very few. People like Kirika—serious... and getting the short end of the stick precisely because they're kind."

"And that's why you became close with me."

"Yeah. But don't get me wrong, okay? It's also true that being around you is just plain fun. I'm not so dexterous that I can live constantly walking on eggshells, and I don't wanna live a life like that anyway."

He deliberately added that so I wouldn't worry. I couldn't help smiling.

"...Eiji, you're truly kind."

"Right? I'm a kind guy, you know!"

"Yeah, I know. I was just reaffirming it."

I'm glad Eiji and the others came today. I was able to become even closer with them than before.

—Just then, Shirayama-san peeked over beside me.

"You have wonderful friends, don't you, Souta-kun?"

"Sh-Shirayama-san. Sorry about that, getting deep in conversation with my friend all of a sudden."

"Not at all, not at all. Though I ended up eavesdropping a bit."

Shirayama-san chuckled heartily. Then, she looked at Eiji.

"Please take good care of this boy. He's played with Haku ever since he was a little child; he's practically another grandchild to me."

"Of course. From now on... even after we become adults, I'm sure we'll stay close."

"Is that so, is that so. That's wonderful, Souta-kun."

"Yes... truly."

Looking at Nagi and the others playing with Haku, I looked back at Eiji.

"Thanks, best friend. For coming all this way."

"You're very welcome, best friend. I'm having a blast."

When I thrust out my fist, Eiji bumped his against mine.

—Winter break was gradually drawing toward its end.

◆◆◆

After Hatsumode, playing plenty with Eiji and the others before they headed home, and after the first three days of the new year ended, the day to return to Tokyo arrived in the blink of an eye.

"Leaving already...? Can't Dad come along too?"

"You have work, Dad....We'll visit again. Besides, you're free to visit anytime."

"Understood... Every week. No, three times a week, I'm coming over, Souta."

"You'll run out of money in no time."

Dad and Mom drove us to the station—and I hugged Dad once.

"Just kidding, of course....Souta, take good care of your health."

"Yeah. Dad, don't overwork yourself either."

"Just hearing those words makes Dad feel like working thirty days straight!"

"Mom will collapse from worry, so absolutely do not do that."

Releasing the hug, Dad looked at Nagi.

"Nagi-chan."

"Yes."

"Live happily together with Souta, okay? There are plenty of things you can only do while you're students. Of course, treasure your time with your own family too. Please give my best regards to Souichirou-san and Chie-san."

"I understand. Please be sure to visit us at the end of this year. Both Father and Mother will be delighted. Of course, you are very welcome at any other time as well."

"Thank you. When the time comes, I'll definitely visit with his mother."

Then, Mom looked at me....This time, I hugged Mom.

"Souta....In life, whoever enjoys it most wins. Just like your father said, there are many things you can only do while you're young. If you feel like doing something, try it first. If you run into trouble, consult us, Nagi-chan, or Chie-san and the others."

"...Yeah. Thank you, Mom. The food was so delicious."

"I'm glad to hear that....Though it might not happen often, make sure to eat properly even when Nagi-chan isn't around. Also, getting along with Nagi-chan is very welcome, but use contraception, okay?"

"I'll keep it firmly in mind."

Her last words were spoken quietly so no one around could hear. Releasing the hug, Mom embraced Nagi this time.

"Please take good care of Souta. Be as happy as can be, you two. I'll contact you just as much as Souta. If you ever want to expand your cooking repertoire, let me know. I can at least give you advice."

"Yes, thank you very much. I will take lots of photos with Souta-kun and send them to you."

"Yes, please do."

Nagi and Mom separated. Then, I held Nagi's hand.

"Shall we get going, then?"

"Yeah. Well then, Mom, Dad. We're off."

"We're heading out, Mother-in-law, Father-in-law."

"Take care, Souta, Nagi-chan."

"Take care, Souta, Nagi-chan."

Waving to the two of them, we entered the station.

Until we were completely out of sight, both of them kept waving their hands.

◆◆◆

"We're back, huh."

"It shouldn't have been that long, yet it feels nostalgic, doesn't it?"

Returning home, I switched on the lights. It was a bit chilly, but we needed to air out the room.

"Still, are you sure about this? I thought you'd be going back to your own house today."

"Today is special. I received permission from Papa and Mama, so it's perfectly fine. Before dinner... let's wash our hands."

Tonight, Nagi was staying over at my place as well. Having been told just a short while ago, I was a little surprised. Though of course, I was happy.

"Souta-kun."

After finishing washing my hands and gargling, Nagi called out to me. The moment I turned around wondering what it was—a sweet, floral scent softly tickled my nose.

"—Ngh."

I was kissed. Taken by surprise... and with her lips feeling cooler than usual from gargling, my heart gave a heavy thump.

"Somehow, it feels like it's been a while. Having this kind of kiss with you, Souta-kun."

"...We did it before going to sleep, but here it's just the two of us, after all."

"Yes. We can kiss anytime, as much as we want. Though I will exercise self-restraint so it doesn't become endless."

Nagi smiled softly. Then, she spread her arms.

"I want a hug."

"Yeah, I was just wanting one too."

Taking her hands, I drew her in. And embraced her tightly.

"It was so fun. Your hometown, Souta-kun."

"I had fun too. Got to see Haku and my teacher... and managed to clear away my trauma."

"...That was your trauma, wasn't it, Souta-kun?"

"It feels a bit mild to call it trauma... but yeah, pretty much."

Considering the original meaning of the word trauma, it was a bit mild. Flashbacks... had decreased drastically since meeting Nagi, and before that, I had Eiji around.

"Not everything... but I was able to learn so much about you, Souta-kun. The things you found fun... and the things that probably weren't fun."

"Yeah. Sharing everything would mean recounting my entire life, which would take years. Of course, there are things I've forgotten too. But I'll probably remember bits and pieces over time, and I'll tell you then."

"Please do. I want to know everything about you, Souta-kun."

When I nodded firmly, Nagi hugged me tightly with all her strength.

"I want you to tell me about yourself too, Nagi. Whenever you remember, of course."

"...That's true. Someday, I'd like to introduce you to my Japanese dance teacher. Oh, that's right. There are a few recordings of me dancing at home. Let's watch them together at home next time. It's a little embarrassing, though."

"Yeah, I'd love to see them."

Replying, I held Nagi tightly. I hope to learn more about Nagi, bit by bit, from now on.

Then, the strength in Nagi's arms loosened, and we broke the embrace.

"For now, my Souta-kun energy replenishment is complete. Shall we eat dinner? And after taking a bath—"

Nagi's blue eyes gazed straight into mine. Endlessly blue, direct eyes.

—Within them, I saw a color I hadn't seen until now.

"Shall we go to bed together?"

"...Yeah. Let's do that."

I wasn't so dense that I couldn't understand what those words meant. And with that, we headed toward the kitchen.

◆◆◆

Dinner consisted of sautéed salmon, miso soup, and kinpira gobo. Needless to say, it was delicious. Naturally, I told Nagi how delicious it was multiple times.

Having an early dinner and spending a relaxing time afterward, we took our baths....Nagi went first, followed by me. It was the reverse of our usual order, but there was a reason for that too.

Wiping the dampness from my hair with a towel, I headed to the room. Something I normally wouldn't do.

Stepping directly into the room—she was sitting on top of the bed.

"Welcome back, Souta-kun. Right over here, please."

"Yeah. I'm back."

Just as Nagi instructed, I sat down on the zabuton cushion placed in front of the bed. Sitting directly on the carpet would have been fine, but she had brought it over for me.

And once I sat down, Nagi brought out a hair dryer with a smile.

"I'll dry it for you. Tell me if it's too hot."

"Please do."

After that brief exchange, the hair dryer was switched on.

Because Nagi said she wanted to dry my hair, I hadn't used the hair dryer on myself.

Warm air blew against my head. At first far away, it gradually drew closer, stopping at just the right distance. Then, my hair was dried as if being gently stroked. It felt so warm, filling my heart with contentment.

"Does it feel good, Souta-kun?"

"Yeah, it feels amazing."

It felt so good I could have fallen asleep if I closed my eyes. Though I couldn't afford to sleep right now.

She continued drying my hair for a while. Since my hair wasn't nearly as long as Nagi's, it was completely dry in no time.

The sound of the hair dryer stopped, and Nagi ran her fingers smoothly through my hair. Then, she buried her face against my head.

"You smell nice, Souta-kun."

"Well... I just got out of the bath, after all."

"Of course, I think that's part of it. The lovely scent of shampoo, conditioner, and rinse. But there's your scent mixed in too, Souta-kun. Fufu."

Nagi embraced me from behind. After holding me like that for nearly a minute, she released me.

"Souta-kun, over here."

Prompted by Nagi, I climbed onto the bed. Nagi squeezed my hand tightly.

Sitting on the bed, we met eyes. Fluidly—our lips overlapped.

"Ngh... fufu. I love kissing you, Souta-kun."

"I love it too. Happiness just keeps overflowing."

"Same here. With love and happiness, my head and heart are filled with thoughts of you, Souta-kun... making me feel so floaty."

Reaching out, she stroked my cheek. I placed my hand on her cheek as well.

"I wonder what lies ahead of us....I'm a little worried that I might go crazy from happiness."

"...I wonder. I don't know either... but, well, I have some worries too. I hear it puts more of a burden on the woman than the man."

"It will be okay, surely....But please don't stop halfway, okay?"

"I'll try my best."

Nagi let out a soft chuckle. Then, sliding her hand down—she stopped in front of my chest.

"Your heart is pounding, Souta-kun."

"...Well, I'm reasonably nervous."

"Fufu, you liar, Souta-kun. You're very nervous, aren't you?"

A choked sound escaped me at Nagi's words....In this situation, there was no way I wouldn't be nervous.

"I'm the same, Souta-kun....Please touch."

"...Excuse me, then."

Prompted by Nagi, I lowered my hand. And—placed my hand over her chest.

Thump, thump. A strong, rapid heartbeat was echoing.

"We're the same. So... let's enjoy this nervousness together."

Nagi brought her face closer... and gently bumped her forehead against mine. Nodding at her words, I pressed my lips to hers once more.

"Hey, Souta-kun."

Embraced, our bodies overlapped. Nagi's body warmth and softness radiated through to me. And—the sound of her heart.

Taking plenty of time, Nagi wove her words. Before long, my heartbeat and hers overlapped.

"—I love you. I will love you for the rest of my life....No. Even after this life ends, even when the next life comes, I will continue to love you and stay by your side, Souta-kun."

Blue eyes like the ocean. Hair like white snow, and skin with the whiteness of milk.

Her lips held the healthy, vivid redness of cherries. The voice woven from them was endlessly clear, like a pure stream.

"Even if I am not born as a human in the next life, I will find you, Souta-kun, and stay by your side. No matter what form I take, I will stay by your side... Saying that might sound heavy, perhaps."

"It's not heavy at all."

I embraced her body. Slender, seeming as though it could easily break—yet never fragile.

"I feel the exact same way. In the next life and the one after that, I will definitely find you and stay by your side, Nagi. And in the next life too, I'll make you happy, Nagi. Absolutely."

"I'm so happy."

A warm light ignited in her blue eyes. Before long, a thin film of tears formed over them.

"I'm so happy, so blessed—it feels like it's all going to overflow."

"Even if happiness overflows, I'll catch it all. Please don't worry."

"Then I am at peace. At peace—and filled with happiness."

The film over her eyes wavered, growing larger. Before long, a tear trailed down her cheek.

"I love you, Souta-kun....I love you so much."

Not just through tears, but in words as well, her happiness overflowed. Just like back then, her polite phrasing slipped away. That too was a side of Nagi. Accepting it all, I pressed my lips to hers again and again.

"I love you so much too, Nagi."

In the room, only our voices, breaths, and intertwined heartbeats continued to echo. Nothing else could be heard anymore.

Clack-clack, sway-sway. Inside the swaying train. In contrast to the outside, the heated interior was filled with stifling warmth from the crowd, causing sweat to slowly seep into the skin. Just breathing felt suffocating.

It wouldn't be strange to dread going to high school every day. Especially after a break like this. Even so, I didn't dislike this time.

Because she always boarded the train at a certain station.

Her hair was white, her eyes blue and very beautiful. Her facial features were remarkably well-proportioned, clad in a warm aura. Her gaze was very gentle, her expressions rich. While not always... she would smile brightly upon spotting me, and when I drew close, she would gently entwine her pinky with mine.

That gesture was lovely, beautiful, and cute.

"Good morning, Souta-kun."

"Good morning, Nagi."

Nagi Shinonome. My lover and fiancée.

Her beauty wasn't limited to her appearance. Her heart was beautiful too.

"Oo—ah!"

Suddenly, a young voice—somewhere between an infant and a toddler—reached my ears. Looking over, a tiny hand was gripping the handle of her bag.

"I-I'm so sorry. I'll make him let go right away. Hey, no."

"It's quite all right. How cute."

What the mother-like woman was holding was a child around one year old. That child... looked at Nagi and giggled happily.

"...Could it be? Um, were you on this train around the end of June last year?"

"Y-Yes....D-Do you remember? Um, I'm so sorry. Back then, I still didn't know how to soothe him."

"Of course I remember. I thought he was such a very cute child."

Nagi smiled softly and warmly. The child laughed happily in return.

"Th-Thank you very much."

"Fufu."

When Nagi gave a small wave, the child waved back with a bright smile. Truly adorable.

"I pray from the bottom of my heart that he grows up healthy and strong."

"...Um, excuse me. You've changed... a little, no, quite a lot, haven't you?"

The mother seemed to remember Nagi as well....Well, with someone like Nagi, it wasn't surprising she'd be remembered.

"Yes, that is true. Even I feel I have changed drastically since back then....Because I met him."

Nagi's eyes turned toward me. The mother looked over as well, so I gave a polite nod. When I tried waving at the child, he waved back with a bright smile. Adorable.

"...You were blessed with a wonderful encounter, weren't you?"

"Yes, both of us were."

"...Yes! There are tough times, but this child is so very cute, you know."

When Nagi briefly glanced at the child, the mother nodded with a wonderful smile and continued.

Until reaching our destination station, the mother shared stories about her child's especially cute moments. And apparently, their destination was closer than ours. They got off the train first. Until they were out of sight, both the child and mother kept waving to us.

"...How cute. Both babies and small children."

"He really was cute."

Agreeing from the bottom of my heart with Nagi's murmur, I nodded. Nagi smiled with satisfaction.

"Souta-kun, how many children do you think would be nice to have?"

That was a question I had been asked once before. Because it was the second time... and because she wasn't running a little wild like back then, I took my time to think.

"I want to say 'as many as possible'... but having too many would probably be tough on the kids too."

"I think that would be fun in its own way, though."

"I agree with that too....Still, yeah. I think having two or three would be nice."

"I see. I agree as well, but... may I ask your reason, just in case?"

"I only have two hands. If I'm going to hug them all at once, I figured that would be the limit at most."

Nagi's eyes widened, and then a chuckle escaped her.

"By the way, I'm included among those you're hugging, right?"

"Of course. Inside my arms, I picture you hugging me and the kids, Nagi."

"I can picture that. It looks so very happy."

While chatting like that—we soon arrived at Nagi's destination station.

"We've arrived already. As always, it passes so quickly."

"It really does. Well then, Nagi, see you at the cafe after school."

"Yes. See you after school."

Entwining our pinkies firmly one last time, I saw Nagi off.

"By the way, heard there was a groper this morning. Souta, know anything about it?"

"I don't....Just to be clear, this time I really don't know anything."

I replied to my friend, Eiji Makisaka. Unlike that one time, looking straight into his eyes.

"Well, figured. By the way, I know about it this time. Because the guy who groped was pinned down right on the spot."

"Oh? Is that so."

Naturally, the word 'groper' carried nothing but bad impressions. At his words, my tone rose slightly.

"Apparently, the culprit was a middle-aged guy and a repeat offender. A male high school student nearby helped out. Ah, from a different high school than ours, though."

"...Sounds like a story I've heard somewhere before."

"The déjà vu doesn't stop there. It's still a rumor, but... Apparently, a web news reporter happened to be on the scene, and interviewed the high school guy who pinned him down. Guess what he said?"

"I have no clue at all... What did he say?"

Eiji grinned. The reason for that—became clear with his next words.

"'In the past, I saw this guy groping someone. At that time, a male high school student around my age shouted out loudly to help. That gave me courage, and I decided that if I ever saw it again, I would take action myself,' apparently. Sounds like a story you've heard somewhere, right?"

"...Who knows. There are plenty of similar stories in this world, aren't there?"

"You're not hiding that grin at all, you know?"

"Shut up. I'll cancel today's study session."

"I'm sorry, I don't want to repeat a year, please forgive me!"

"You're not gonna repeat a year anymore, man..."

While we bantered like that, the chime signaling the start of homeroom rang.

Today, our daily routine begins once more.

◆◇◆

After school. To prepare for next month's term-end exams, we came to a cafe.

"By the way, did you see the online article that came out earlier?"

"...? What is it?"

"Ah— Kirika. Probably better not to show that to Nagi too much, right?"

Idle chatter while waiting for Souta-kun and Eiji-san. When I reacted to Kirika-chan's murmured words, Hikaru-chan stopped her. Wondering what it was, I stared intently at Kirika-chan.

"...Ah, um. Sorry. I lack delicacy, but looks like there was a groping incident."

"...A groper. I have already overcome that, so I am fine, you know. Though my hatred for their existence remains unchanged."

"I see. I hate gropers with a burning passion too."

"Me too~! So that groper got caught. By the way, judging from witness testimonies around, the guy seemed to be a repeat offender. And apparently, there was a male high school student who pinned him down right there. The interview with him caught my attention."

"What did he say?"

Everything up to now was just the setup; that was what she really wanted to share. Thinking that, I asked, and Kirika-chan grinned.

"To summarize: 'In the past, a male high school student shouted out loudly to save a high school girl who was being victimized by this groper, and that gave me courage,' he said. Doesn't that sound familiar from somewhere?"

"...Rather than having heard it, it's more like an experience I lived through. I remember it very well."

Kirika-chan grinned. Influenced by her—I smiled happily as well.

It wasn't necessarily guaranteed to be him. However, if... his courageous action had spread to someone else, that made me incredibly happy.

"It's nice, seeing good actions like that spread."

"Yes, truly."

Agreeing with Hikaru-chan's words—chime-chime, the clear ring of the bell announced the opening of the cafe door.

Turning around, two male students came into view. One was Kirika-chan's lover, Eiji-san.

And the other was—

"Souta-kun."

My beloved lover, fiancé—and my very first friend, Souta Minori-kun.

Even though I see him every day, I still feel so happy whenever I spot his face that I call out his name.

He looked at me and offered a soft smile.

"Nagi."

"...Aren't you two creating a married couple aura just by calling each other's names at this point?"

"Totally a wife welcoming home her husband returning from a long business trip, wasn't it?"

Hearing the voices beside me, a soft chuckle escaped my lips. Souta-kun approached... and I felt an intense urge to kiss him, but I held back for now.

Souta-kun sat down next to me and secretly entwined his pinky with mine. Just that made me so, so happy.

"Sorry to keep you waiting. Shall we order and get started right away?"

"Yes! Let's teach plenty. Enough for Kirika-chan to get top grades in her year."

"Save me, Hikarun! I'm gonna be turned into Nishizawa-san, the Study-Lover!"

"Isn't that great? Come on, let's do it, let's do it."

"Traitor! Eiji, save me!"

"Sure. Then first, tell me what the exam scope is. Then I'll help you."

"Never seen an Eiji with this little intention to help before!"

"Now then, Kirika-chan. Please put your smartphone away for now. It will interfere with your studies."

"Ugh... I'll do my best... Let's order a parfait when we're done."

"You'll get fat."

"Yep, you just crossed the line, Eiji. I'm shoving all the chocolate from the parfait straight into your mouth."

"Stop that! I told you I'm bad with sweets!"

Watching their exchange brought a natural smile to my face.

If someone had told this to the me of a year ago... no, even the me around the end of summer break, I wouldn't have believed it.

A gray daily life—I couldn't call it that. Back then, I was devoted to various things centered around Japanese dance in my own way. However, the me back then was all alone.

However, things are different now.

I have friends like Hikaru-chan, Kirika-chan, and Eiji-san.

And—Souta-kun. My deeply beloved, special person who is also my best friend.

This is the new daily life I welcomed as things gradually changed.

Things might continue to change bit by bit from now on. Since nothing stays unchanged, it surely will.

However, there is something that will never change. That Souta-kun will be by my side one year, five years, ten years, and even fifty years from now. At that time, both he and I will surely be smiling.

If possible, I hope all of us will still be hanging out together then.

"Nagi, is something wrong?"

Called by Souta-kun, I returned to reality. Then, after a long blink, I looked at the form of my beloved.

"No. I was just feeling a little sentimental, thinking about how happy I am."

Thinking of the future is important, but the present is even more so. Because time won't stop for us.

Engraving that in my heart, I returned a brilliant smile to him.

—May all of this happy feeling reach him.

I don't know if that feeling truly reached him. However, the smile he gave back to me was equally brilliant.
