Ch. 2529

68-04 Confession

To an outside observer, Try was merely idling away on Rebun Island, staring blankly into space without doing anything in particular.

In reality, however, it was steadily absorbing a wide variety of information from its surroundings.

"Lord Try, have you grown accustomed to this place?"

The one asking was Land 1000, who was in charge of Rebun Island's development.

"Ah, Lord Land 1000. Yes, thanks to your assistance."

"That is good to hear."

"...On that note, there is something I wish to discuss with Lord Jin D. Would you be able to call him for me?"

"Understood. I will pass the message along right away."

Because the time difference with Rebun Island was roughly half a day, it was the middle of the night on Hourai Island, but Laojun deemed the matter important enough to wake Jin.

"...Try wants to talk about something?"

"Yes, My Lord. I apologize for waking you, but I felt it was necessary."

"Yeah, no problem. Still, I wonder what it wants to talk about?"

Murmuring to himself, Jin took his seat in the Doppel's cockpit.

Try was waiting on a high bluff overlooking the sea.

"Try, I heard you had something you wanted to discuss."

"Ah, Lord Jin D. My apologies for troubling you to come all this way."

Jin D sat down on a suitably sized rock.

"So, what is it you'd like to tell me?"

"Yes....It is regarding my past."

"Oh? Did you remember something?"

Try could not shake its head, so it waved one of its arms from side to side instead to express negation.

"No. Erased data cannot be recovered. When I speak of the 'past,' I mean the era shortly before I ceased functioning."

"I see."

"I stopped functioning in the Lauren Continental Calendar year 3790."

It seemed Try was going to speak about the Jagus Principality, so Jin, piloting Jin D, listened intently.

"It appears there had been some manner of trouble, and I was dormant deep within that mine. The one who awakened me was Lord Niestol Almazov Melkana, the head of the Melkana family at the time."

"I see, so that's what happened."

"And so, I entered Lord Niestol's service."

"Yeah."

"Using the knowledge at my disposal, I helped elevate Lord Niestol's standing within the Pioneer Revolutionary Corps. In the end, he rose to the very top."

He then decided to take the name Niestol Almazov Jagus, Try explained.

"So that's how it was..."

Through Try's explanation, the reason why Niestol's bloodline ascended to the seat of the Duke became clear.

(Was it all to get back at the head house?)

It could certainly be said that he succeeded brilliantly.

After all, the descendants of Maksimovich Almazov Melkana—who had practically been cast out of the head house—had, until very recently, ruled the Melkana Autonomous Region on the Pandor Continent from the shadows.

Even so, Jin D decided to keep quiet until Try had finished speaking everything it had to say.

"...Furthermore, I prepared a magi-brain for Lord Niestol."

This had been accomplished by restoring one that had been left unfinished and abandoned by someone among the people who were presumed to have created Try.

"Regarding that magi-brain, I felt its foundational knowledge was lacking, but at the time, I had no time left."

"Is that so?"

"I also informed him of the ruins located 'west of the settlement known as Mahalig,' knowledge of which I possessed for some reason."

"..."

With that, it became clear why the Jagus Principality had set foot into those ruins.

"...And Lord Niestol promised to return me to my original location once I ceased functioning."

"Indeed, you were properly laid to rest within the ruins."

"That is my final memory before awakening this time."

With that, Try concluded its story.

"Thank you. That gives me a very clear picture of how the current situation came to be."

When Jin D gave his thanks, Try once again waved one of its arms from side to side.

"There is no need for thanks. After all, it was I who was saved."

Continuing, it added:

"...As expected, I am curious about the current state of world affairs. Would you be willing to tell me what has become of the Jagus Principality?"

"If that's what you wish, I'll tell you."

"Oh, please, by all means."

And so, Jin D explained the current state of the Jagus Principality to Try.

"...And that's how things stand."

"Good heavens... To think such things have occurred."

Try seemed somewhat stunned.

"It appears to have diverged considerably from the nation the First Generation Lord Niestol envisioned."

Since its voice sounded somewhat sorrowful, Jin D decided to ask a follow-up question to confirm.

"...What kind of nation was the first Niestol trying to build?"

"To the best of my knowledge, in order to prove himself to the head house, he sought to create a far more magnificent country."

If that was true, the first Niestol might have actually been a reasonably wise ruler, thought Jin as he piloted Jin D.

(Though there's no way to confirm it now.)

It was entirely possible it had merely been a facade he put on in front of Try, or that he underwent a complete change of character after Try stopped functioning, but either way, there was no longer any means to find out.

"...What do you think of the current Jagus Principality?"

"It appears to have diverged considerably from the nation the First Generation Lord Niestol envisioned."

Try returned the exact same words as before.

"...Is there anything you want to do?"

Jin D ventured to ask, but...

"No. I have no interest in a Jagus Principality without Lord Niestol."

"I see..."

Hearing that, Jin, through Jin D, felt half disappointed and half relieved.

"...By the way, did the previous Lord Niestol ever investigate the ruins 'west of the settlement known as Mahalig'?"

"Yeah. Most likely."

Jin D explained that when they investigated the place, there had been clear signs of human entry.

"I see. Then my advice proved useful."

"...Yeah, I suppose so."

It was likely that very advice that had led to the establishment of their inhumane method of domination through brainwashing, but knowing there was no point in telling the present Try, Jin D swallowed the complaints that had risen to his throat.
