Ch. 2142

57-30 Airfield Development

Around the time heated debates were taking place in the Klein Kingdom regarding the development of Toka Village...

Yuzo Mayaka, the chief of Toka Village, received a visit from Jin.

"A wind tunnel, you say?"

"That's right. By building one and running experiments, we can test an aircraft's performance without having to fly it."

"I see... And you wish to build that here?"

"Yes. If we set it up alongside a workshop here where the flight course is located, our development efficiency will improve dramatically."

This was effectively a massive offer of aid from Jin.

While the Klein Kingdom would undoubtedly take various measures to develop Toka Village going forward, Jin intended to go beyond that and furnish the facilities himself.

Given the scale of a wind tunnel and a workshop, the chief of Toka Village had the authority to grant permission.

"By all means, please do."

With the future prosperity of Toka Village in mind, the chief readily gave his approval.

"Now then, I suppose I should get the foundation work out of the way."

The location for the wind tunnel and workshop had already been decided.

It was an open, flat stretch of land about two kilometers west in a straight line from Toka Village's residential district.

Although it was slightly removed, Jin did not particularly want people watching the construction methods he used.

Furthermore, using Grand Search, he had already confirmed that solid bedrock lay directly beneath the surface.

"Looks like I can build something sturdy here."

The work was carried out by fifty Smith units.

Both the wind tunnel and the workshop were prefabricated—the components were manufactured on Hourai Island, sent via transporter, and assembled on-site.

Thanks to this, the buildings were completed in just two hours.

"Yeah, that turned out nicely."

Both the wind tunnel and the workshop were roughly the size of a small gymnasium. This had been done with an eye toward the future, ensuring ten-meter-class aircraft could be tested and assembled inside.

The interior outfitting was still to come, but Jin planned to invite Lordtoss and Rubina to help with that.

Word that Jin intended to build a wind tunnel and workshop in Toka Village soon reached the leaders of the Klein Kingdom via Pigeon.

"Oh! This is wonderful news."

"Indeed it is. We can put the fact that this location is endorsed by the Magi Craft Meister front and center, promoting it both at home and abroad."

"...Let us not get ahead of ourselves. Before that, we must obtain permission from the man himself to use his name."

"Quite right."

To put it simply, after that exchange, an envoy was hurriedly dispatched to Toka Village.

Naturally, Magic Technology Minister Cowen was among them.

"If we are to make a request of Jin-dono, how could the minister not go himself?!"

He had apparently insisted on going.

Deep down, however, there was undoubtedly a great deal of personal interest fueling that enthusiasm.

"Noooo...! How could this beee...?!"

Having spent two full days traveling to Toka Village, Magic Technology Minister Cowen and his party discovered that the wind tunnel and workshop had already been completed the day before, and Jin—the very man they sought—had seemingly already left.

Seeing Magic Technology Minister Cowen slumping his shoulders in dejection, Village Chief Yuzo Mayaka called out to him.

"U-Um, Your Excellency..."

"...What is it?"

Magic Technology Minister Cowen answered tersely, all the light drained from his eyes.

"Well, you see, I believe Jin-dono will be returning shortly."

"I-Is that true?!"

"Y-Yes."

"I see! In that case, I shall wait for him."

His spirits lifting slightly, Magic Technology Minister Cowen announced that he would go inspect the Flight Area and rode off alone on horseback.

"Ah, Your Excellency!"

However, the guard ritters accompanying him could not simply let their charge wander off alone. Two of them—half their detail—set off in pursuit, while the remaining two stayed behind on standby in Toka Village.

Heading west, Magic Technology Minister Cowen eventually came upon the workshop and wind tunnel that Jin had erected.

"Incredible... To construct something of this caliber in such a short time."

Structurally, it consisted of rust-proofed steel framing fitted with plywood panels reinforced with Toughening.

The material provided excellent earthquake resistance and had been designed with thermal insulation barriers in mind.

As Cowen stood entranced by the buildings, the roar of a Blow Engine reached his ears.

"!?"

Looking toward the distant sky, he spotted a small black silhouette drawing steadily closer.

"Jin-dono's... Hurricane?!"

Cowen was well aware of Hurricane, the colossal Blow Floater in Jin's possession.

"What luck! To be right here just as he returns."

The silhouette grew larger before his eyes, and within five minutes, Hurricane touched down in the Flight Area.

"Huh? Cowen-dono?"

Stepping down from Hurricane, Jin looked surprised to see the Magic Technology Minister... or rather, feigned surprise.

In reality, Laojun had already informed him in advance.

"Ah, Jin-dono, it has been quite a while."

"Likewise. I'm glad to see you looking well. Has everything been fine with everyone back in the kingdom?"

"Yes, thanks to your support."

Following these customary pleasantries, Cowen got down to business.

"The truth is, we have a certain plan underway..."

The Magic Technology Minister began his explanation.

They spoke inside the newly constructed workshop, where workbenches, tool racks, chairs, and tables brought over by Jin were already being arranged.

"...And so, as a desperate measure to revitalize our economy, our nation intends to develop Toka Village."

"I see."

In truth, Jin already knew the full story. Even so, he had wanted to see how Magic Technology Minister Cowen would present the situation and what requests he would make.

On that front, Cowen proved remarkably candid. Without attempting to sugarcoat anything, he laid out the nation's current predicament, openly confessing that the King had made the agonizing decision to tap into the emergency budget.

"Regarding this airfield, I would like it to be named the 'Marikka Memorial Airfield.'"

Jin added a request of his own, asking if he could erect a commemorative monument at the edge of the airfield.

"Oh, that is a splendid idea! If we may use the names of all three of you—Marikka-dono, Jin-dono, and, if possible, Maquina-dono—nothing would bring us greater joy!"

"As for Maquina... I will speak to her myself."

"Please do! We leave the matter in your capable hands!"

Cowen accepted the proposal with delight.

"As for the airfield's infrastructure, I'll take care of the water supply, restrooms, first-aid facilities, and the like."

"Thank you very much. Please, feel free to invoice us for the expenses."

With discussions continuing in this vein, the development of the Marikka Memorial Airfield steadily moved forward.
