Because Narika had been so serious about it, her parents had likely been genuinely angry, too.
I wondered what she really thought about her future...
"Come to think of it, Narika, have you ever thought about becoming a professional athlete?"
"Hmm... I get asked that a lot, but honestly, no. Sports are fun, and I know I'm suited for them, but I'd rather recommend them to other people."
Maybe her parents had seen through that side of her temperament as well.
If she were truly dead set against inheriting the family business and wanted to start a dagashi shop instead, her parents likely would have changed their tune. But in the end, she’ll probably end up taking over the family business.
"Have you played any tennis lately, Itsuki?"
"Not really... I've been pretty busy with various things."
"I suppose that's only natural, given your situation. But if you ever feel like playing again, just say the word. It’s the one thing I can actually teach you!"
Narika puffed out her chest as she spoke.
That wasn't true, though.
Her earnest efforts had inspired me more than once. She was just so negative that she failed to see her own strengths; she had plenty of qualities worth respecting.
"Miyakojima-san, were you talking about the Management Game?"
Just then, a female student on break called out to her.
Narika stiffened instantly, her face turning rigid. I poked at my own cheeks, gesturing for her to relax her expression.
Narika softened her face just a fraction and turned around.
"A-Ah, yes... that's right."
"Um, a group of us from class are going to talk about the game after school today. If you're free, would you like to join us, Miyakojima-san?"
"What? M-Me...!?"
"Yes!"
Faced with the girl's pure goodwill, Narika was thrown into a total panic.
"Wh-wh-wh-what should I do, Itsuki...?! What do you think I should do?!"
And here I thought she’d finally made some progress...
For her own sake, I had to be firm.
I answered for her.
"She’d love to join you."
"Itsuki!?"
"She has some really insightful things to say, so you're in for a treat."
"Itsuki!?"
Her eyes were starting to well up, but I offered her a silent cheer in my heart and headed toward the boys' court.
